Title: Hooray - lovely poo!
Post by: Justy on May 27, 2005, 09:42:27
Just found out one of the mums at preschool keeps horses and has loads of muck to get rid of!  So taking delivery next week of a trailer load FOC!

I don't know how old it is though so may not be very rotted - my question is will it be ok in big heap at top of lottie?  Does it attract a lot of flies and how long does it take to rot down enough to use on lottie?

Ah poo, the stuff of life.  Keep it covered when you're not using it. I have put some in a compost bin and it's rotting down fast compared to stuff on the plot.  I used some in my bean plantings yesterday.  Am using some to grow pumpkins and courgettes in.  I planted spuds in it (quite fresh too but all I'd got).  You can spread it out if you wish and let worms take it in.  If you're covering your allotment with sheet mulch or similar you could put some muck under there too.  As for flies well yes I suppose it does attract them but you pull back the cover or bin lid and stay away for a bit til they've gone  :)

2 tons delivered this evening (on main lottie path so loads of shovelling for me).  It is about a year old according to the guy who delivered it.  It doesn't smell but it is pretty gooey and looks just like ..well...horse poo really.  Is it just carrots that don't like it?  Can I start digging it in around other things?

Keep it away from all your roots, not just carrots; they'll fork.

If it is 2 years old I wouldn't have thought it would still look like poo, but I maybe wrong.  As RB says, keep away from all your root crops, but if it is good and old, then I don't see why you couldn't use it to earth up your spuds, mulch your beans and peas and get dug in wherever you have vacant patches.
