Title: Tomato Mad
Post by: MarthaMad on May 25, 2005, 14:55:34
Just counted and I have 45 tomato plants ready to go into the ground...  :o  I swear they multipied overnight... I can't remember potting that many...

I'm obsessed!

Not only am I Martha Mad... But is appears to be Tomato Mad.

But in my defense I was able to eat not a single tomato last year. I managed to go away for a weeks holiday, and came back to tomato's killed by blight!  :(

That's what happened the one time I tried growing them. It was the only year I've had blight so I'm trying again this year.

I have 20 on the plot at the moment, 20 in the greenhouse, and at least 20 waiting in the wings!  Can't beat them homegrown gems!

Lost all of the allotment ones last year to blight - and taking measures this year to try and slow the rampage.  In the greenhouse at least half the plants are already well into flower so am hoping to see some baby fruits soon.  ;D

2005 anti-blight measures include;

1. Lidl tomato house on allotment to keep rain off, containing 12 plants

2. Four Ferline (so called blight resistant) plants planted outside on allotment

3. Two growbags worth growing in back garden

4.  One growbags worth given to my sister as insurance (she lives 30 miles away in London)

fingers firmly crossed, last year was a nightmare  :'(

i have heard some night donkeys about tomato blight on our allotments. i hope to be in a good position as furthest away from other plots, but only time will tell. i would be gutted if it allcame to nothing. will have about 11 plants on the plot.

i might also have one on the balcony but to be honest, as that overlooks the allotment, any blight spores will just find their way onto them, too :-\

last year I only had 2 tomato plants (which I lost to blight, so was disappointing, but alas not the end of the world) - however this year, I too would be devasted if my 50 plants were all hit! I'm trying to grow fast cropping varities this year, but they're still not that mature, so I think they'll be cropping later that hoped anyway... Anyone try using Bordeaux mixture?

Glad  I'm no the only person to go a bit OTT with the Toms. Last count I had eighty and they have still got to go in 5 inch pots. Guess what I'm doing all afternoon? ;D :o :o

I tried bordeaux mix when i had blight, it didn't seem to do anything at all.

Bordeax isn't a cure, it is a prevention, but you have to be vigilant and repeat using it.  I am bordeax-ing this year, did as soon as the plants went in, and will repeat, well, weekly I guess - that is what the label says, unless someone tells me different.

80! 60! I have 10 and we are still swamped by gazillions of tomatoes! Of course, I actually sowed 40 but am disciplining myself after the vast harvest last year with 14 plants. Where are you guys going to put them unless you have several acres...

I put 10 plants in yesterday, I'm going to see how well they do, and maybe put more in next year.

Green tomatoes make gorgeous chutney. Don't worry if they're not all ripe!

I have been given about 20 by my neighbour and about 20 from my Dad.  I am going to abadon my modules of Gardeners Delight that are only about 3 inches high.  Ten of the plants I got from my neighbouring plottie are Delight so I do not need mine - this ones I got from my Dad are all different and most are a mystery, but he's the big tomato grower in our family and has a greenhouse.  Therefore, I might not even bother next year and just wait for them to come my way.  I can concentrate on somthing else and return the favour.
