I love woodpeckers, but never seen one on the grass before, always been in a tree or hanging onto a peanut feeder.

It's usually green woorpecker that you see on the ground; it's a bird of scrubland as much as woodland, while Greater Spotted is more of a strictly woodland species. I get the latter in the trees round the allotments, but the odd green which visits the site is easier to see. I worry about those; they'rfe notorious for raiding beehives in winter, but I've never had problems yet.
