Title: problem with Norton
Post by: David R on May 24, 2005, 14:47:16
I was having trouble vieing the site over the last few days, so decided to experiment and remove Norton Antivirus completely and replace with a free antivirus software download. I can now view the site no problem.

Is it co-incidence or is Norton antivirus also anti A4A?

Norton is rubbish! Tried to use a trial version to remove this really bad virus i had- didnt work- absolute pants- in fact not even that useful. Download avg free and spybot and make sure please for your own sake that you remember to regularly get windows updates- i know to do this from hard and unfortunate experience.

Happy and safe surfing
John

Hi David R,
I installed Norton Antivirus on my computer 5 months ago, within a week I was having all kinds of problems getting online.

I phoned my internet provider and was asked almost imediately if I was using Norton, and was advised that that was my problem. >:(

On removing it from my system every thing returned to normal. ;D

The only thing I can say is use Grisoft's AVG.  It's the dog's when it comes to virus protection - I have had Norton and other freebies.  It updates daily and does everything automatically and it is completely FREE.  They say they want a virus free world and only charge for commercial versions - which a home user does not need, unlike with other stripped down free versions.

I bought Norton because when you are a newbie to the net its 'the thing to do'. Ive never had any probs and its up for renewal in July.

Saying that I will be looking around for others to use now that I have learned so much more.

Clanger your sound like it worth checking out cos Norton is about £30 per year.

I removed Norton after having problems and had a look at Red's virus controller...I liked it so downloaded it. It scanned and found a Trojan!

Used to use AVG it was ok for a while but eventually I was infested with worms & it even let a couple of viruses through, the last 2 years I've used NAV, it did let one trojan through but it's far better than AVG in my humble opinion, I've only been internet enabled for 7 years.
Incidentally, my 17 year old lad uses AVG on his PC upstairs and I was continuously reformatting it to get rid of viruses, I wonder what kind of websites a 17 year old visits??
Luckily for me he's studying programming at college so he can sort out his PC problems himself now

I am broadband only and only connect to the phone line when I need to fax so I do not know whether this is a particulary problem - have only ever had a dialler once and that was when I was 56k and Norton - it let is through but the daft thing dialled over the speaker so I shut it down before it could do any damage.

Sorry, didn't realize, if you're on dialup forget Norton, it's designed for the US market where the majority of people have high speed connections.
I have a 2mbps connection, oh I love this fat pipe ;D

I ran AVG for three years - brilliant, and no problems.
When I upgraded to XP, the friend who did it, put on Norton.
It is a pain.
I have been told from the boffins that you should not run two programs.
I have also ben told that Norton can be a nightmare to uninstall.
