Title: For Eric
Post by: Mrs Ava on May 24, 2005, 12:29:15
Look what greeted me this morning!  My first ever blue meconopsis.  I have a white variety also with small buds coming.  I sowed these seeds (which were a freebie last year), last spring, planted them out late summer when I had gaps in the border, and low and behold, looking GRRRRRRRRRRREAT!  True blue!!

And what about these primulas Eric.  Same seed as yours but look at the mottling of the flowers!  I shall mark its location and save some seed to see if I can get the same again.

Splendid!. Meconopsis seem to be getting easier to grow, or perhaps not. Slugs really do like them, my flowers were beautiful, but half eaten.
The primula worries me a little in that mottling like that is sometimes a sign of virus. Seed does not carry virus infections in primula so if the mottling occurs in new plants then it is OK.

oooeer.  Okay, well, it is only one of the 40 or so plants I planted, so...are there any signs I should keep an eye out for with the plant in general?  If it isn't a virus, then I name that plant, Primula Emma Jane.  ;D ;D ;D

If you look in Phillips and Rix, there is a picture of a Primula japonica flower almost exactly the same as your mottled, sorry.

Oooh Emma - I am so envious - your meconopsis look great.  Eileen sent me some seeds on a swap last year and I was so thrilled, they started to germinate and then suddenly - they all toppled over and died :'(  Is there a knack to germinating these I wonder and do they need a special place in the garden :-\
