Title: Basil Seeds
Post by: Rox on May 19, 2005, 09:30:17
Hi everyone  :) I sowed some modules of lemon, thai and genovese basil earlier this week. For the first time ever, I noticed some swollen greyish looking balls at the top of the seed compost in several modules last night!  :o I thought they were somehow basil seeds that had rotted so removed them (they were squishy enough). However, this morning when I was moving one, I noticed a little green coming up under it  ??? I am thoroughly perplexed - does basil seed somehow look like this before it sprouts?? Again, I've never had problems germinating basil before, so this issue is a first! any help, thoughts or advise would be much appreciated - thanks in advance!!  :D

It will be the seed case probably  :)  These are shed as the seed germinates and they often go mouldy and look like grey spots or lumps on the compost surface

Don't panic Rox.

I usually sow basil on the surface of the compost and when the seeds get moist they swell up like that. It worried me too when I first saw it. But it's a good sign!

Hope they grow!
