Title: got well and truly ripped off..
Post by: gunnerbee on May 18, 2005, 18:25:38
today , i thought id support the local shop £1.85 for two droopy courgettes, 90p for a red pepper and £1.50 for a lollo rosso lettuce. Didnt realise they would be that much and i didnt want to put them back as their was a long queue behind me. Wont go their again!!!!
It does make me a bit cross as thet go on about how healthy our kids should eat and then charge a fortune for veggies etc. Hope the frosts clear soon so i can get my own stuff going!!!

I know how you feel, i support my local farm shop (which is not that local as i drive about 25mins to get there) where i get my meat from and theyve just introduced locally grown veg so i thought id try some. To say i was dissapointed is an understatement. The cauliflower was droopy and not firm and the potatoes were wrinkly. I have to say on this occaision the supermarket produce was far better (wash my mouth out).

I think you will find that salad prices are expensive at the moment, because most of it comes from Spain this time of year and they had some very bad weather a few weeks ago which as killed a lot of there produce,  as anyone noticed that there is hardly any celery in the shops because of this.

Hoooo!
I haven't looked at the price of salad lately as I have been reaping my harvest?? I do know that at the local Lidl they are selling all fruit and veg half price. I assume that means salad too.

Do the salad greens in Spain grow out in the open then? I assumed that just about all salad items there where grown under plastic and that the weather conditions would not have that much effect.

As the bottom of our freezer is visible now and choices very limited, I bought some broccoli from the supermarket, it was 50 Euro cents for half a kilo. I can only hope the broccoli from the allotment will be that good, I don't think it will be as pretty but at least I'll know it will be 'clean'.

that's a shame, my greengrocers are brilliant and extremely good value, i haven't been to a supermarket since christmas and am trying to encourage others to try out local shops, its so frustrating when people  can't get good produce at good value though.

Our local greengrocers are very good and stock a wide range of veggies, even asparagus and bulb fennel which are quite exotic for North Derbys.  Our local deli is buying asparagus from a grower in our small town but won't say who it is in case we got and buy it all.  I hope soon to be growing my own  :)

I'm lucky living in Leicester we have a six day market - which is very unusual apparently. Don't usually venture into the corner shop to buy fruit and veg. I will venture into the supermarkets now and again - usually when I've got more money than sense or when the supermarket is cheaper than the market - currently the case with Bananas - even M&S is cheaper than the market at the mo. :o

Oh I envy you Sarah, I would love a market! We have a farmers market once a month at the local town car park, our biggest problem with buying from local farms is the cost  :'(  I would really love to support them more, but unfortunately Morrisons saves us so much more money :(

Am relatively happy that Morrisons bought Safeways - they were so expensive, but where my mother lives, there was already a Morrisons, so the Safeways store was sold to Sainsburys- and my mother complains that they are even more expensive than Safeways.

If I go into the local greengrocer, some of the stuff is certainly past its best. Also, there is an office at the back with the door open and the air from that brings cigarette smoke. I don't buy much in there - normally go in for a quick fix of satsumas which I can peel.

Farmers markets are lovely but oh so expensive, I do feel better that they are getting all the money but I can't buy fruit & veg there. Not when its in the centre of the normal market. The market that comes to Leicester only has one or two fruit & veg sellers (don't think they sell that much) - the rest are meat & cheese sellers, wine, eggs and a bread stall. I haven't been for ages - since I switched jobs. I'm going to have to send my mother to it with a list.  ;D

Did my degree in Leicester and I have to say while I lived there I did not shop for veg anywhere else.  I do not knwo why the supermarkets in Leicester bother stocking veg.  Leicester Market is the best place I have ever been to for both quality, range (massive) and value - and you know that your money is going to the right people.  Not a bunch of over paid over champagned city types who do nothing but price fix to their own advantage.

Sarah

I don't often shop in the Leicester Market but there are surely about a dozen fruit and vegetable sellers there.. I do know that if you go there late in the afternoon they are almost giving the stuff away.
Certainly it is not as busy and varied as it used to be.

Oh there is. This will teach me to type on messageboards at work while trying to look like I'm actually doing work. ;D
Sorry to confuse you - what I meant was there is only one or two fruit & veg sellers in the Farmers Market that turns up the last wednesday of every month and sets up in front of the Corn Exchange.

I used to do most of my food shopping in the market when I lived in Leicester in the '70's. Birmingham has an even better one, but it's been going steadily downhill for years as the Council has forced rents up to the point where only the most successful traders can survive.
