Thinned out my turnips yesterday. They're doing very well. However, I noticed the leaves really seemed to irritate my hands - almost like stinging nettles. My skin has blistered a little, too. Anyone else experienced this?! Or do I have mutant turnips?! :o
Same like courgettes? And Radishes?
Yes I have had the same problem. There seems to be tiny hairs causing the irritation on turnip and courgette leaves similar to nettles ow ::)

This year is my first of growing courgettes. I don't like radishes much, so not growing them. Guess I will have to don gloves next time. They didn't put that in my veggie books!

Oh good. Well, not
good. At least I'm not imagining it!
It's tomato plants for me. I have to wash off all that yellow stuff from my hands and arms after handling them or I start itching.
Borage for me, man that stuff irritates!
i have a pair of old driving gloves (fabric and leather) which i use for gardening. they are excellent. also considering the amount of small shards of glass onmy plot, i am wearing them every time i do anything around the plot.
dont get irritated but MIL does on tomatoes, like aqui
On The White Album by The Beatles, at the end of one track(? which I forget) John Lennon yells "I've got blisters on my fingers". I always assumed this was from guitar playing, but maybe he'd been thinning his turnips. Or pinching out toms. Or picking borage! :o LOL
i always find the woman at no.33 very irritating-i think i may be alergic to her.
charl-you could ,of course, have some stinging nettles IN your turnips! ::)
Kitty
I was wondering when someone was going to say that. :D The mesh has done a good job on stopping the weeds growing too. I checked for nettles, it was my first thought, but there were none.
How do you know my neighbour? (woman at 33?). Irony of ironies I live at a no. 35. ;D
haha!-good job i didn't pick 35 at random then! ;D
i know-theres always one s***t a**e isnt there.. ::)
itsnt it strange what things people become allergic to?...a friend of mine has just become allergic to rabbits...good on the one hand-she doesnt like bunnies......slightly less good because shes a vet nurse :(
I live at 39 - phew if you'd have gone the other way .......
;D ;D ;D ;)
Not me, i love the feel and sound that pumpkins make when you touch them
Almost all plantlife at the allotment seems to bring my hands up. Tonite they are sore, blistered, cracked and I am having trouble straightening them. I really should get a gentler hobby!
i suffer from cracked finger ends which bleed profusely in the winter-mmmmmm!nice!most attractive!
anyway-i recommend'Lotil' hand cream from the chemist-non-greasy-soothes the cracks and helps them heal quickly.....
Kitty. Try honey on your paws. My fingers split all the time and the only way I can get them to heal is honey and a plaster. I even dose the kids on camp with it as we're not allowed to give them 'drugs' including the likes of savlon etc.
thanks baggy-i'll try that-honey seems to cure most things doesnt it?
ta!-purr..
I use manuka honey for all that ails! Good for bad tums too!

Very few honeys have actually been investigated for healing properties, so there's no saying that we don't have something as good in the UK. I use my own honey, and also propolis, which is bee glue. It's essentially plant resins collected by the bees and used to fill cracks, and cover everything in the hive to a greater or lesser extent depending on the strain. It's antibiotic, antifungal and antiviral. I use it for mouth ulvers, cuts, and I've even cured abscesses a couple of times.
Borage HAS to be the most irritating for me >:( :o
I absolutely hate the stuff ! Although the plant is very pretty... :P
