Title: WORM THINGY???
Post by: giantseye on May 16, 2005, 19:20:06
Yesterday while planting my runner beans, I dug up a white worm ( I think it was a worm) :o

It was about an inch long, and white with a light brown stripe down either side.

Can anybody tell me what it is? :o

Is it a friend or foe??

Sorry for the questions but my books don't cover this one :(

Interesting, but no idea. However one piece of old lore might help. If it moves fast it is a friend and if it moves slowly then it is an enemy! Generally true.

Is it curled up - like a cutworm?

It looked like a root at first ???

It didn't move at first and stayed straight.

It started to wriggle after we poked it a couple of times :o

I'd never seen anything like it before, the worm was slender and pointed at both ends, if that helps!!!!

My rule of thumb is if in doubt, kill it. This is based on my (may be flawed) premise that a harmful bug will do more damage than a friendly one will do good. Or perhaps I'm just a homicidal maniac???

Hope this one is not recognisable - http://www.dgsgardening.btinternet.co.uk/flatworm.htm

Grunting, grumbling, swearing luridly in three languages - they've been found on our site in Leeds.  *&££"£*&@*.*&^£%$s

Hope it's not - all best, Gavin

Hi Gavin

Thankfully it wasn't one of those. ::)  It looks a nasty piece of work!!  What damage is it doing up by you ???

Sprout,  nice idea, but I'm one of those daft people who can't kill anything unless I know whether it is friend or foe.

knowing my luck, I'll find that it will have eaten all my strawberries by the end of the season :-X  and I'll be wishing I'd killed it anyway.

Thanks for your help anyway ;D
