Why I wonder did they not say Sheer ne'er a clout til the may blossom is out ??? I searched Google when Merry Tiller said same and could not find anything that mentioned it to be blossom ???

I was always told it meant until May was finished ie it was June, but that was when I lived in the frozen north - north of Watford Gap you understand!   ;)

Hi Roy - the May is of course the hawthorn blossom and therefore doesn't need 'blossom' added as it would literally mean 'til the may may be out.  Or may not if it's not then it's mayn't....... ??? ??? ???  Brain hurting again. 8)

Don't know the sayings but yesterday was in garden in bikini, today in jumper......

Quote‘Ne’er caste a clout ‘til May be out’ refers to May blossom (hawthorn, ...) rather than the month of May. The advice of country folk in this saying was to make sure to keep your vest on (clout meaning a vest or undergarment) until the May blossom was on the hedgerows â€" which these days happens in April rather than May, more often than not. This would indicate that the weather had really warmed up!

It's true :P

but on a positive note the wind is changing on wednesday apparently which should warm things up (although it'll probably be wetter but hey, you can't have everything and i think i'd rather have rain)

I follow metcheck avidly and it seems to be pretty accurate. They've got tonight frosty but then it just gets warmer and warmer for the rest of May.

Just found this codswallop on this site http://www.devonshirebabe.com/index.htm
Although it does say click here to read some interesting facts about the month of May. ;D

To wash blankets in May is considered unlucky, and there is a saying 'Ne'er cast a clout 'til May is out', which means don't leave off your wooly underwear until the month of May is past! :o :P ;D

Thank you Georgie ;D

Kitty   I thought of you tonight and I had to smile.  My niece who lives in the sticks in Lincs has her car broken down so I says it sounds like you have a flat battery, and you'll be fine if you can find a hill to roll down so you can kick start it!  She reminds me that she's in the flattest place on the planet. Ooops, sorry I forgot !

If she can't get home at the weekend she can't help out on me plant stall this weekend.   :)

then her next nearest best bet is derbyshire!

Where abouts in the sticks - there are a few hills near where I work with is in the southern Wolds near Horncastle.  It may be a little closer than the Strait (location of Kitty's Shop)

Ta for the kind suggestions.  My niece has just flitted from Louth to North Somercotes, so from slightly undulating to dead flat.  What a time to get a dud battery.  She has no peeps over in Lincs so was a bit lost.  She rang the RAC just to see if she could get help and they asked her reg number and it came up on their system!  What luck.  The car was bought second hand but still had RAC cover.  Anyway a nice man went round and fixed it. So relax Kitty she's not going to ask you for a push  ;D

RC  She visited Lincoln for the first time the other day and enjoyed it muchly.  She has also been to have a look at Sleaford so she's seeing the sites  :)

Kitty I had a trip round the farmy back lane bits the other week when we had to go round a road accident and got diverted via backwaters.  Very narrow road with ditches either side.  Ooer!

yes-i think we are the road accident county of the uk wardy so beware!and neice beware too!
our dykes are at their most perilous when they fill with water-many people lose their lives in a lincs ditch by drowning :(
lots of boy racers hurtling to the coast i think-a few years ago it would've been our lad hurtling but thankfully he has outgrown the boy racer bit! ::)
ask me fer a push?
and i'd got all kitted up for it too :(o well...maybe next time! ;D
