i have only done this last year with some tomatos and peppers, i put them in a china pot!!!
I have just poured some water over them to get them out to plant!!! they were stuck to the bottom!!!!There must be an easier way than this, and how long must you leave them to dry out before planting again. Many thanks, sarah.
Hi Sarah. Some seed is best sown fresh, other seed is fine to dry and store, it all rather depends, I'm afraid. For seed which can be stored I make sure it is completely dry - again, this depends on when it is gathered and the conditions - then I use small brown envelopes which I keep in a sealed plastic container in a dry cupboard. Other people swear by storing seed in the fridge.
Bet you're more confused than ever now, eh? ;D

For seeds like peas and beans etc just leave them to ripen fully and dry on the plant-exactly the way one do for dried beans.
The method I use for tomato seeds is a bit more messy but I have kept some strains gowing for 10 years now without any decline in vigour or disease;
Let a couple of fruit get really ripe,then `squish` them into a small bowl and leave until a nice layer of mould is seen. Then rinse thoroughly in a sieve to leave the seeds,place on some kitchen towel until fully dry and then bag up-get some `change` bags from a bank or BS-write out a label with the variety put that in the bag and leave on a low shelf in the fridge until next season.
Works a treat.

PS-some F1 hybrids may not come true.
i want to save a load of haricots-but i read in joy larcombs book that they are toxic unless cooked...does this have to be a specific temperature -and cooked alone or say,in a stew?
my stew temps arent very high-long and slow i do them..would that be okay to rid them of their toxicity?

Treat the same way as kidneys - soak them, bring them to the boil and boil fast for ten minuttes, skim off the scum that develops then turn down and boil for about 40 mins. Only add salt late in the boil. There is level of toxicity to dried beans but they only tend to lead to excess gas (both US and UK types ;)).
Hope that helps
Gunnerbee,
An easy way with toms and chilis, if you only have a few is to spread the seeds out on a bit of kitchen towel. They dry and stick (as to a teapot) but you tear up the paper so that each seed is separate.

It does have its compensations (yes I have finally managed to plan a decent maths lesson and am now feeling a bit happier). It is the most rewarding job in the world and I can always relax for one day at the weekend by gettting up to the lootie and doing some digging and planting - and come the Autumn - seed saving. And, if I get behind with my planting etc, I do have the holidays to catch up.
