Wait!!-apart from one freak time when I lived up in Leeds this is the latest spring I can remember in 25 seasons-cold winds during the day and night time temps that should have been over a month ago.

I wonder if we are reverting to how the weather used to be, when frosts could be expected up until the end of May.  The old saying used to be never cast a doubt until May is out.  (I think).

Don't cast a clout (remove a garment) till May is out. The saying probably goes back to the days of the old calendar - it was changed in the 18th century - but I can't remember which way it changed.

Yep but I have them under cloches. I visited them during the day, something I can not usually do, and found them sweltering. On my plot the Sun is quite hot if you can get some shelter from the wind. We have been having sunshine and showers for the early part of this week but cold at night. I am hoping the weather bucks up before they out grow the cloches.

"May" refers to May blossom (Hawthorn), not the month of May.

The May blossom is almost fully out in my area but I shall give it one more week, the weather is so cold at night everything would stop growing

Wonder how it changed in 18th Cent? Anyone know?

I thought the romans added June & July Hence Sept=7 Oct=8 Dec=10 etc.

And yes,my pumpkin has been out for 3 weeks! :o
Under a cloche but not sure it was a good idea, may remove and replace by another from the greenhouse.

Most of my Marina de Choggia squash are in the ground - a few held back in reserve - after being in the (unzipped) mini-g for a week or two, and my pumpkins are going in tomorrow after the same treatment.

Re Casting ne'er a clout... er... my May started blossoming in early April... so technically I should have been gardening today in a fetching little two-piece, instead of my Nanouk of the North outfit.

With this in mind, here are some old weather sayings updated for 2005:

Cast ne'er a thread
Till the chill leaves thy head

Drop nary a layre
Till ye feel the sun's glayre

Bare not thy knees
Till it's eighty degrees

Cover that thigh
Till the end of July

And the good news...

When sun's heat finally flickers
Ye may cast off... whate'er ye like!

;D

The romans added July (Julius Ceaser) and August (Octavian/Augustus). The calender change was from the Julian - Gregorian where we lost 11 days, there were riots in the streets :)

Jeremy

BTW -not putting my pumpkins out yet.

The old Julian calendar (which went back to J Caesar) was out by 11 days, so they changed it to a more accurate one. John Wesley gives both sets of dates in parts of his Journal; it must have been chaotic for a while.

Have put a couple out just cos I want to get going!!  But have others being tenderly cared for at home  :)

Blisteringly hot day here - I had to open up the cold house and put all my tomatoes outside as they were drooping.  Up on the lottie my next door neighbour's all got blasted by frost during the week.  Seems like you can't win!!

I have only just let my Parkray go out and I am still cold in the am's. Can't see me plants shivering just 'cos I'm in a hurry.

i put mine out on the balcony to harden off several days ago - and have only had them in one night since as it was forecast to be a bit nippy.
i will plant them out this weekend - and finally reclaim my balcony!

PS: they are in various states from a foot tall (long?) to only the first true leaf.
