My Jersey Knight asparagus seed, sown back in March has germinated, and the little ferney seedlings are around 3-4" high, and still living in the mini-greenhouse. I do not have a bed prepared for them, and I doubt it will be ready until next year! Is it okay to just pot them up in to bigger pots for this year, and plant them out next year?
You've not got much choice Moggle ;D I was looking at asparagus seed and I like the look of one in the Seeds of Italy catalogue which is very thin variety (bit like meeself) ;)
Moggle,
I grew some a few years back and planted them out in a temporary bed as soon as they looked big enough to fend for themselves.
I then lifted and replanted the quite large crown early in the following Spring.
The size was such that I think they would have been severely restricted in a pot less than 9"
Phil
As Phil says - outdoor bed if you can.
Welllllll there is a little bit on the new half that might do, but I was planning to put strawbs or toms in there... decisions, decisions :-\
So we're talking at least 9" spacing when planting out then?
Remember how mine germinated before yours Moggle - well it's now keeled over.
Must try sowing a few more soon, but I have no room (actually I have minus room as I'm thoroughly overflowing everywhere!)
Thought I'd revive this thread to say that I finally planted out the little seedlings in the last couple of weekends - in the ground as suggested. Cheers for the advice so far peeps :) Should I stake the little shoots somehow? They seem so floppy!
Aqui, sorry, don't remember reading your reply. I have some spare connovers colossal asparagus if you want some. I even have some CC seedlings if you can make it up to Oxford ;D
