Hi all. I used to live in Chalton, just outside Luton, and before that I had an allotment at Lewsey Farm (manny many years ago, now covered in houses :()

How is good old Luton these days?  My mum still lives in Leagrave

I am in Bedford - Goldington Field. Not sure what the soil is like on the lottie - not found it yet under the weeds, but my garden is lovely!

Next door in wing bucks the soil is light for digging but drains fast. Like a desert to days ago.

Ah, I remember Luton, as I'm swallowing my crouton.

Grew up in south Luton but moved to Cambridge now. OH's family still there though.

Hi,
We have a plot in Bedford and although the weeds are terrible the produce has been brilliant this year, so I guess the soil must be rich.
If there are any other growers on the Goldington plots get in touch.

Hi,

We live in Bedford, but our allotment is in Carlton. We have just met up with some other liked minded allotment holders in Bedford the other day over a few bottles of home made wine and food. We are planning to set up a Permaculture group in the local area - if anybody is interested please do get in contact.

Any of the Bedfordshire folk found good nurseries/ garden centres they can recommend?

I am kind of stuck in the comfort zone of going to Frosts at Willington but there vegetable selection is not too great. Rarely do they seem to have vegetable plants (that are not tomatoes!)

Just read somewhere else that someone saw purple sprouting broccolli in their garden centre today, never seen something like that down there for example??  ???

Ages since I lived in Wooton and Marston Moretaine.  I always thought heavy clay was the standard up there?!   Still, made for good fishing locations... ;D

some parts seem to be like that. We are lucky where we are our soil is lovely, both in our garden and the allotment! But a few streets across town and it is a different story.

Some areas of bedford are pure clay and others not to bad.
My lottie in ampthill has a sand clay mix which is great, as my garden up the road is very sandy and does not hold any moisture or nutrients. :-\

were you the people wandering round with the plan in your hand on Sunday then?

Didn't realise any of the empty ones had sheds, didn't spot that when I got mine a few months ago. We were building ours on Sunday.

daisymay, yup, I was the lost soul wandering around with the map, turned out the site I was offered was taken up an hour b4 I got to register it  :(  so , got another one with nothing on it, completely fallow for some time it seems. Waiting to get it rotivated then will get down to some hard(ish) grafting   {:¬)#

Oh well, never mind! least you still got one.

See you down there some time soon no doubt. The council took a couple of weeks to rotivate ours, we tried to clear the worst of the weeds before they came, but they beat us to it.

Post by: daisymay on October 21, 2005, 10:17:25
Oldwolf - we are practically neighbours, I am no 97.

I think yours has been rotivated if it is the second on the right, so no excuses now!

daisymay, as you will have seen from one of my other posts I have moved to plot 89 now and not getting it rotovated. As we all met on here first, should we re-name it Internet Avenue ?    ;D

Post by: daisymay on October 21, 2005, 11:05:42
I hadn't seen that actually. Think that is on the same side as me now then.

We had ours rotivated and to be honest I do not regret it. The weed have grown back to an extent but they are nothing like they were and it is a lot easier mentally to deal with!

be down there on Sunday hopefully, depends how we get on with our garden! skip arrived at 8am this morning!

Been down for 3 hours this afternoon. Ordered my compost bin today as well. Started turning the ground until I stepped back to roll a ciggie then realised I was digging the main communal path !  Quickly relocated my spade.    {:¬)#

I live in Herts, but my son and daughter-in-law live in Shefford.  DIL runs her own Florist & Gift shop in the High Street called 'Cathy's Bloomers'.  If you ever want any floral arrangements done, she's your girl, really good.  Pay her a visit and say 'hi' from Pat ;D  I am sure she will appreciate the bit of free advertising ;) ;D

well got down first thing to see, and not rotavated yet,  but will be down to get some pics tomorrow at least i got the first of the jobs done at my folks place, just one more to finish tomorrow then its a relaxing shower. Picked up a  good fork as well and got 2 good hoes, one is a dutch hoe and the other is a 3 tined one. Well once the rotavating is done i'll start double digging and be ready for the spring. My partner in crime on the allotment( My daughter)  and i are already deciding what we want to grow next year.

Ours took about 2 weeks to be done. The girls at the Harper Centre did not seem to know what was happening much when ever I rang them, so I found out the guy at the council who is responsible. If you haven't got his details PM me and I will pass them on. He was great when I wanted my shed, emailed back within the hour to say I could build one.

Old wolf - I wonder who your neighbour is then - it was rotivated about 4 - 6 weeks ago and we have never seen them since, I assumed you were second one in!

I only made it down for about 5 mins on Sunday to pick up a spare spade from the shed and to say hello to my onions and garlic (sprouting already, am very chuffed!). Hoping to get down there this weekend, got to finish digging the bed for the cabbages and spinach to go it.

I don't know - you and Aiken ain't half fickle!  ;D

Cool, there was only a 1/2 left on there when we looked and it was about 6ft high - is that the one? had some amazing alliums and fruit bushes etc...

It looked really good on Haynes, very established.
