Title: the chat room
Post by: Derekthefox on May 08, 2005, 21:23:28
I have created this topic as several people have mentioned that they are confused over the current operation of the chat room and problems.

I have already contacted Dan expressing my concern over technical problems.

No doubt he (hi Dan) wil also see this topic, and may contribute.

So far, I have noticed:

the people in the room are not shown on the home page
occasionally, visitors seem unaware of anyone already in the room
the chatroom is an OPEN room, ie accessible to outside visitors, via an IRC client (whatever that is)

if you spot any other problems, list them here, then I feel Dan will have a chance to deal with the whole issue, rather than just bits and bobs

I gave up on the old chat room because I found it difficult to access using Safari as a browser - Internet Explorer sometimes worked for me but was unreliable.  I don't know if this is anything to do with the fact that I use an Applemac computer.  Anyway, I have had more success accessing the new room but I have also noticed that the home page will say that  there are 0 users in the chatroom when there might be several members in there.  I don't fully understand what an Open chatroom means (other than the fact that non-A4A members might be chatting in there?) Why does it have to be Open?  When I go into the chatroom I get a dialogue box asking me if I want to grant this session  :-\ whatever that means.  In spite of the problems I had accessing the old room I thought the format was more user friendly and it felt more comfortable somehow.  I would like to know how other people are getting on with the new one. :)

It only shows me as the only member whenever I go on as well. How do I see if there are other people chatting?

Not showing who is chatting, or indeed if anyone is chatting is very off putting.

Oh! I haven't been in the chat room for a couple of weeks because it always says there are no users.....I shall have to take a peek from now on!

Thought I was there and my message seemed to be there but, really, just couldn't get my head around it.  Felt as if I was talking to outer space with no little green men or women around!  :(

In right now, and yet the message says no peeps there at all!  Curiouser and curiouser.

It may be a little more successful now - it should say who is in there.

I'm looking for a better way of doing things, and have been offered assistance by a few people, so hopefully with combined technical knowledge we shall succeed!

Thanks for your comments, and patience.

I couldn't get into the chat room at all on Wednesday gone. I kept getting a grey screen with a red x in the corner. Have been able to use it before then ok.

Every site I've ever been on which had a chat room (and there have been quite a few of them) has reported similar problems; it seems to be endemic.
