Title: Tomatoes again + again...
Post by: Diana on May 08, 2005, 16:55:34
Yes I know, there's a million + one threads...

Appologies over, I have two questions (for the moment):

1 - how big should a tomato plant be before it's planted in growbag in greenhouse (unheated)? Should it have it's first flower (read that somewhere + it seemed a bit strange - don't think I've waited that long before)?

2 - Can I earth then up as they grow, or is it better to wait until they're taller so they can start off by being planted deeper?

Thank you

Not 'how big' or ' how tall' - but how well rooted? Can you take it out in one piece?

4- 8" tall? Are the roots showing through the base?

'They' say 'in flower', but I have never achieved that.

Whatever you do, it'll work!!

Thanks Tim - will look at roots tomorrow.

What about the depth issue? Is it a case of what it goes in at it stays at? Does "earthing up" help at all?

I normaly plant to the depth of the seed leaves unless they have grown a bit leggy and I have taken the seed leaves off and planted them in pots a bit deeper.
Toms will root all up the stem if in compost this reminds me of Ina's layering them last year.

Thanks Teresa (and for the PMs)

Tim - had a look at the roots + they're starting to curl under at the bottom of the pot (not round + round all root-bound). Does this mean they'll need a couple of weeks yet?
