Title: red stuff on parsnip loo roll holders
Post by: mm-b on May 07, 2005, 16:17:27
Hi
I planted my parsnips in loo rolls and now they are ready to be planted out I have noticed raised red spore like things on about half the loo rolls :(
It doesnt look like rust. Its dark red and round raised blobs, if that makes sense.
So my questions are;
1) Is it ok to plant them out or should I bin them all or just the half with this stuff on.
2) Does anyone know what it could be
3) Do you think it happened because they were cramed together and a lack of air was the cause.
I planted my sweetcorn in this way and they are ok.
Thanks for your help :)
Melanie

Mine always go mouldy:
I assume it's because they're bio-degrading
(which is why we do it!).

Don't know about red moulds,  though.

Seems a shame to waste them.

Yes but what if the red mould spreads?
Nice thought though, if thats what it is, that its bio-degrading.

Mine had red lumps on the toilet roll inners which were quite hard to touch.  Sounds like what you had.

Planted out the parsnips two or three weeks ago in their cardboard outers and they seem to be doing quite well so I don't think the red lumps caused a problem.
