any info on when to crop after growing from seed? the first spears have now appeared
Do hope that this is not too much of a shock??
2 years??
thanks tim for that, what do we need to do with the first spears, just leave them?
Yes - let them grow fronds &, when they yellow in the Autumn, cut then down to 2" & mulch with compost or manure. Feed in the Spring before the shoots appear.
It's all worth waiting for!!
tim im sorry but this is all very new to us, but what is a frond?
Oh, sorry - the 'fern' or 'whateverthegrowthitmakesiscalled'!!
Not a very good picture of some 'whateverthegrowthitmakesiscalled'

Is this what you're looking forward to? Or is that unfair!! First pick.
PS If it makes you feel any better, I think we have asparagus beetle! The new shoots are curling over into the ground. Ah, well ....................!
Was looking forward to another 2 spears last night when someone (i won't name names) decided to hoe one of them as I had been doing some weeding earlier on the plot..... :'(
I know the feeling. I mentioned elsewhere the time that our occasional chap said "just rotovated that spare patch for you".
It would have been our first cutting year from seed. Did I smile??
Tim
Sounds like a good reason to grow asparagus in raised beds! ::)
Nice thinking!
We have some asparagus on our lottie, it has some nice shoots at the moment. Can someone let us know when to harvest them and what to do with them once harvested :-\
Many Thanks
Mark
