Title: Dessert Island plants
Post by: aquilegia on February 16, 2004, 14:02:19
You are about to be banished to a dessert island and have room in your luggage to take just three plants along. You will have enough food on the island, so don't need to worry about feeding yourself (although you are allowed to take edible plants if you wish). What three would you take and why?

I'm trying to narrow it down to three, but might not be successful...

Definitely my namesake aquilegia - I love the flowers - so pretty and many different colours - plus the advantage of easy propogation!
Bluebells - there is nothing more beautiful than a bluebell wood in full bloom. One of my happiest memories from being a teenager is riding 'my' old horse through such a wood. RIP.
Campanula - another beauty that spreads nicely and seems to flower throughout spring and summer.
Tulips - gorgeous, elegant flowers.

Oh heck - OK - I'll leave the campanula as it rather looks like bluebells.

I'm one of these "if you can't eat it, it ain't worth growing" people - so romanesco, pink fir apple, and asparagus - all wierd (and beautiful in their own sweet way!) to look at, and so good to eat!

Kind of restricts my choice of desert islands though  >:(  - no tropical palm-lined beaches!

All best - Gavin

The first would have to be a rose i love the scent,  ;D
second would be gladioli cause of the colours,  ;D
and third would be a thistle to remind me of the wife  :o

My first would be snowdrops - just love, love, love 'em.  ;D

My second would be my red Japanese Maple - if I left it behind Ian would kill it!  >:(

The third would be a mango tree - then I could scoff them all day long and keep them all to myself.  :-[

This took some thinking about and hubby and I both have differing lists.
His list:-
Jasmine-for the wonderful exotic smell
Cannabis-need something to pass the time(and it is a desert island so no one will know ;D)
A Grape vine-well you cant be banished without the chance of a glass of vino or 5.

My list:-
Bird of Paradise-do I really need to say more(preferabley Emma Janes not mine because hers is flowering and mine has years to go)
Climbing rose 'Commpassion' for the fab scent.
Any lavender. for the scent and it is just so relaxing to have in my bath. And to make a nice pillow to help me sleep.

Great thread, Aqui!  But, oh dear, only three ..... mmmm

Daffodils - for the soul - I luv em!
Rosemary 'Green Ginger' - the smell is divine all year round and it peps up any savoury dish
A willow - to cast shade, make lovely 'leafy' noises in the breeze and provide me with raw materials for baskets and furniture.

I might have to come back and modify this list later!

Okay, sat here staring blankly at the screen for an age trying to think of just 3 plants, this is tough Aqui, really tough and I fear I will keep changing my mind, however....

1. Blackcurrant bush - love the fruits and adore the smell of the bush, leaves, wood.
2.  Snakes head Fritilaria - my all time most fave flower, a harlequin pattern, so gorgeous
3. okay...at the moment, I can't narrow this down, this is terrible, I will have to come back when I have decided and re-post!   :-/

How could I forget the lavender? I think I'll have to substitute the tulips for lavender.

You found it tough? Look at me changing my mind constantly!

EJ - you must tell us what your number three is!

aaaggghhhh  this is so tough.  I would lean towards an edible as you have the pleasure of the plant and the produce, so I think number 3 would be a sweet cherry tree.  The wonderful blossom followed by those delish fruits.  I know both are short lived, and I know I will spend my days chasing those tropical birds away, but it would be worth it to eat those sun warmed, sweet, juicy cherries.  :P

(However, I am still struggling with the fact that snowdrops would be a close choice, so delicate and fragile looking, and yet in the coldest of snow and frost, they flower on. Tough as old boots.  And of course a grape vine.  The wonderful leaves that can be cooked greek style, the shade it would provide, the sweet juicy grapes, the grape juice and vino to guzzle and the dried currants to chow down on)  ;D

If I am going to be stranded on a DESSERT, rather than a Desert, island, I would take:

Chocolate cosmos
Chocolate vine
Heuchera "Chocolate Ruffles"

Yum, yum!

Ten x

 ;D

(ps no offence intended re. spelling!! I just want to live in a pudding paradise!)

well spotted Ten - I was wondering how long it would take for someone to notice.

It was a genuine spelling mistake - I only realised I got it wrong walking home from the station last night!

It's one of those words I can never remember properly!

Talking of 'desserts' - strawberries 'cause I love 'em and hopefully they would spread all over and give me a constant supply (although I am not sure whether they would grow in the sand) :-/
Fuchsia - as they are my favourite flower and in the warm climate would just keep on flowering. :D
Rose 'Albertine' which would climb through the trees and give me that wonderful scent.
I could go on, but restricted to only three :(

2. Thyme, again for scent and blue flowers

3. Pieris for all its many facets

Hi, I love the programme (and Morrissey is on this Sunday which knowing him will be an interesting listen!) and it got me thinking about what plant I would take to my desert island, then did a search, so I thought I'd give this thread another life  ;D

Well, for starters I think I would have jasmine for it's scent, followed by hellebores for their beauty and probably a mango tree (but if my luxury was an endless supply of G&T's I'd make it a lime tree!)

So what would you choose?

Well, it would depend on where the island was, but if it had the same climate as the  UK, I would want a hardy geranium, as it would spread quickly and soon remind me of home.  I'd also need a rose, maybe "Peace",  and  sweet peas,  for the colours and scent.
I'm also kind of hoping that the desert island would be of the Bounty advert variety, in which case I could take tomato seeds and maybe eat them all year round.
