Title: Runner beans
Post by: Greenfingers Jo on May 06, 2005, 10:36:03
I've been (sorry about the pun!) out this morning to check the progress and to tie them in. I've noticed that the beans that went in 3 weeks ago, on old canes inerited from last house owner, now have a black tinge to the edges of the leaves but not the ones that went in two weeks ago on brand new canes.
Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks

Not sure but to guess I'd say the blackening was down to the weather - one or two cold nights since you planted them may have damaged the leaves a bit and made them go black around the edge.

if so its nothing to worry about - they will grow out of it soonenough as long as they arent exposed to too many more cold nights.

I am not aware of any diseases of runner beans that could cause damage like you describe.

Hope this helps

Hi there

We don't even plant our beans out until the end of May when the risk of frost is less. In fact I haven't even started them off yet!    ;)

No real answer there, I'm as plagued as the next person. Only thing i can say is the bigger and stronger the plant is befre it goes in the ground the better. A few nibbled leaves wont matter quite so much.
