1) Broadies. Sown in the autumn (1st time I've grown them) and are all in flower.Do I need to pinch the tops out, please? No sign of aphids around. Ta
2) Courgettes. Am SO cross >:( Fresh seed bought this year - Zucchini - and out of 8 attempts only ONE has germinated :o. I need 4...too late to try again ??? - should I look to be (horror of horrors ;)) buying the extra I want?
Oh, and yes! - complaint to T&M already written.. ;D
Thanks, Lishka
I sowed some Zucchini the other day too so we'll see how mine do - better than your sowing hopefully. It's not too late to sow courgettes though :) I love em :)
I sprayed my broad beans with crushed garlic in water today and my carrot sowings. Whether it will repel nasties remains to be seen - can't do any harm though I hope
Many thanks for swift reply!
I'll give the courgettes another go then...never EVER had this prob before. Really miffed. Got the most gorgeous mound of muck to grow them on, too........
I'll keep a close watch on my broadies, too...........don't really want to use my last-year's garlic on them as a prophylactic - was a bit too generous with the plaits I gave away as prezzies............only got 4 cloves left now :'(
Definately not too late to sow more courgettes, and when you do pinch out the tops of your broadies, steam them and eat them, delish Lish! ;D
i only sowed my courgettes today!
I read you can sow them successionally too. I have the feeling they'd romp away once the weather really warms up (if it warms up!)
my butternut sqaush hasnt yet moved - whereas the other squashes and courgettes are all up. may have dodgy seed too
but, i have only just started mine as well and there is plenty of time yet. they grow about an inch a day :o (well mine to)
btw, when does one remove the surplus seedlings down to one per pot?
I wouldn't know Svea, I only plant one per pot so I don't have to throw any away which breaks my heart!!
Lishka - I sowed the 2nd courgettes 14/5 last year. They were the ones that went on to give 60 per plant. No panic?
Many thanks for the replies.
Courgettes: I'll give another sowing a go. Thanks for the reassurance, all.
Broad beans: still not sure if I have to pinch out the tops - or do I just wait til they get infected by aphids at the tips before I do so? (And if the latter, no way am I going to be eating them, Doris :o ;D)
A_M,
On broad beans, I usually leave mine until they get black fly.
I think (and may be wrong) that they longer they grow onwards and upwards the more flowers and hence beans they produce
Phil
to answer my own question, was told yesterday to pinch out NOW before the monsters have a chance to grow any amount of root.
but, i take your point, doris. they looked so healthy and full of juice - and i had to cull them off :-\
