morning folks,
i have two questions.
my basil plants have been growing very well, pr i cked the seedlings out into modules and they have raced ahead. i have approx 20 plants. when do i repot them/plant them out, and if i do pot them, how big a pot per plant, or does one pot a few up together, for company?
i suppose they will be planted out with the tomatoes when the time comes.
secondly, my moster baby seedlings all emerged yesterday and have grown about an inch overnight already :o
the book says to remove the surplus seedlings and only leave the strongest when the true leaves have formed. but, i am kind of inclined to remove the surplus now to give the remaining the whole pot to themselves.
what do you advise?
cheers
svea
I know that Stephan doesn't agree with this, but I put one to a 7-9" pot.
Five plants last us the season (did them in a grow bag last year) growing to about 18" high. Can't grow them outside though.
thanks tim
now, anyone on the moster seedlings question?
pretty please
1. When? At a guess, when they are 3 or 4" tall & have made a good root-ball.
2. Confused! Monster 'baby seedlings'??
yes, the cucumber/courgette/squash/pumpkin seedlinds dont look like they are from this world
when do i thin them out to one seedling per pot?
another quick question on the basil - when repotting, do i pot deep? or would that rot the stem?
cheers
svea
I think that would rot the stem Svea. I have always found Basil temperamental creatures until they get going.
As for thinning your squash babies, I would say as soon as you can see which one is good and strong as it is the biggest of the ogres you wanna keep! ;D
but they are going already, EJ.
the basil plants are all between 3 and 5inches high
but you are probably right about the rot potential :-\
