Title: strange mushrooms in my compost
Post by: Ceri on April 26, 2005, 11:51:05
I've just inspected by sunflower seedlings which are in loo rolls to discover that growing either from the compost or the very bottom of the loo rolls are 2-3 inch high very thin fungi - at least half a dozen around the bottom of each roll.  There were none at all there yesterday - is this from the loo roll or the compost do you think?

The sunflower roots are starting to curl around the bottom of the loo rolls so I'm about to plant them out under mini cloches - will the fungus affect the roots do you think - or am I OK just to knock them off and plant away?

In my honest opinion I think that the plantlets in the loo rolls will be just fine. I think the fungi has come from the compost.

the stems are mushroomy beige colour, the heads are beige with dark brown stripes radiating from the centre - like umbrella spokes but much closer together.  The stems are very thin and the heads are less then a centimetre in diameter.

at least I'm not alone - I shall brush off the fungi and carry on regardless - it must be to do with the loo roll middles - if they were edible mushrooms we could be sitting on a fortune!

Thanks for the reassurance
