aha - can see them at last!
I think they're Oxlips. (Cross of primrose and cowslip).
My Dad's got one, growing next to a conventional small-flowered cowslip so they are easily distinguished. I suspect that the cowslip (from my garden - they just arrived one year!) had been pollinated by one of my reams of primroses before I dug it out for him, and seeded itself in its new home. Makes for an interesting pair!
