Title: lily bulbils from scales
Post by: Kerry on April 21, 2005, 19:04:03
i have a success! i'm pleased to be able to report-with thanks to Palustris for his advice-that i have some lily bulbils propagated from scales.
i'm particularly pleased, as they are from lilium regale.

all i did was snap off some outer scales before i planted the lillies in the border
(previous year they had been in a pot).
these were then placed in a plastic bag with slightly damp vermiculite, put in the airing cupboard-and that was it!
very simple indeed.

this was about a month ago, today i have checked them all, all scales have some bulbing at the base, but some scales have bublils the size of a small pea with roots.
something for nothing!
would be even better if i could get a photo for you all.

Bow, curtsey, wave to the adoring crowds, thank every one I have ever met. But seriously, now is the time to get the babies nicely potted up and growing in JI2 and watch out for slugs, they love the new growth. Well done you!

thnaks, Palustris.
this morning i have detached the bulbils big enough to handle and have potted them up. i've put them in the cold frame, which is open all the time at the moment, and i'll keep an eye on the slug menace. i've put the other scales back, as i can see they're going to produce!
