The first leaves on most plants are the same - sorry I know that doesn't help. But if you are planting them out in rows, then, when the second set of leaves appear - which are the true plant leaves, you will be able to tell the difference between the plants and weeds as they are all in a line.

Hope this helps

Fingle - I reckon that, by the end of your first season, you'll know what all your plants look like, in their various stages. Take photos, just in case you forget. And publish on the Board??

Adding to Lily's idea - if you are careful in your spacing, you will soon see what is out of place.

On second thoughts, don't wait that long. Sow a sample of everything you have in a trial tray, germinate quickly, & there you have it. Label carefully!!

There's no need to mark the line if you don't want to.  If you sow the seeds in a straight line though you'll know it's a veggie and not a weed as the weeds will be all over the place but your veggies will be in serried ranks ;D

Or you could plant in circles if you wish but you'd still know which were the veggies and which were the weeds.  You could always "draw" a line with sand to mark your row or leave a stick there or something.  Happy gardening  :)

I have a bag of b&Q compost at the lottie. I line and cover the drills with it, makes identifying rows a bit easier.

Having similair troubles to you Fingle with carrots and parsnips, even where I HAVE marked the rows like this though  :-\

Even when you know what you sowed, without a label you can be in trouble!!

Which is the Parsley & which the Celery? Yes, I know, do a smell test!
