Title: Whats up with my spuds???
Post by: Mayapapaya on April 17, 2005, 21:01:05
Hiya -

Can anyone tell me whats up with my spuds. I planted earlies in Mid March (South East England) and last week when I checked they were just coming up looking very happy. This week I checked and they are all gone. The leaves have just disappeared altogether or in some cases are all brown and shrivled away. The spuds are still there and the roots look healthy.

I'm sure this is a dumb allotment newbie question but what is going on here? Slugs? Frost? (I haven't noticed any)? Lack of water?? Will they recover? What should I do?

Thanks

Maya :(

Some of my spuds got frosted and they went all dark and withered  :( So I'm guessing frost - but I am not an expert!  :) If it is frost, many people on here say all is okay, and they will recover.

Assuming frost, like ours, they'll regrow.

A couple of mine got frosted too, (i am also in the South East) and looking at the weather forecast, they might get a 2nd go! Oh well, the joys of gardening! ;D

One good reason to earth up and cover new growth as you see it.

I am supposed to be covering all the plant then? I thought that earthing just covered the stem!

What are the poor little leaves going to do if I keep them under ground? When do you stop earthing up?

Must read book gain, must read....

Earth up completely, if there is a danger of frost, give it a couple of days and the leaves will be breaking the surface again.

Stop earthing up when you run out of soil or the mound gets to high to make it impractical.
