it my tear-a****g hurry hurtling round wilkos i picked up what i thought was spinach, which i love but have never grown before-only when i got home i saw it says 'spinach beet'-a good substitute for spinach'...is it not spinach then?i want the stuff popeye eats! ???
It's perpetual spinach, very similar but the leaves are a bit more chewy
It is the one I usually grow -it doesn't bolt, lasts about a year, I get about three pickings a week from a 20 foot row, the flavour is a little bit more earthy than true spinach but I just take the leaves when very small.
right!
thanks for that-i dont mind it being bit chewy-makes you concentrate on the taste a bit more!
kitty ;D
Yay! That is what I grow as it doesn't seem to bolt and grows on and on and on and on and on and on.......
Still picking my last years!
Am thinking of trying Spinach Beet myself next year, as Spinach "proper" seems to be a bit of a devil to grow (bolting as the others have mentioned). That's further than I've ever got, because it just won't germinate for me!!!
So perhaps your error was a lucky one. ;)

Sounds like you've been looking at the menu in our house kitty. ;D.
just repeat after me.spinach is good for you,,,spinach is good for you... ;D
Kitty, what you have may be Swiss chard. The Dutch name for Swiss chard is 'snijbiet' which means cut beet, you can cut it and it grows again. Really good stuff.
I can vouch for it too Kitty - been picking mine for almost a year - it's just started to bolt a bit as I've been away for almost a month (not a holiday but a bereavement - just lost my dear Mum) so not been able to pick it recently but picked loads yesterday and still more young leaves coming on.....I'm so reluctant to dig it up.
I like it so much had it with scrambled eggs on toast tonight - they went well together :P
Have got a new packet of seed to sow a.s.a.p. :) - H.P.
sorry about your mum hp :(
