Title: newt eggs
Post by: izzy on April 14, 2005, 18:00:00
i have found one newt egg in amongst some frogspawn i collected.

how long do newt eggs take to hatch? because all the tads have already hatched, but this hasnt yet. except the inside is slightly more grey..

How do you tell the difference between frog/toad and newt spawn  ???

Izzy, what makes you think it is a newts egg? They are usually wrapped as a single egg, around a leaf or a bit of weed. They are very small and you would normally be hard pressed to spot one.I have lots of baby newts each year but i have never spotted an egg yet. However if it really is one, then it is probably unfertilised and that is why the inside is opaque. But exactly the same can happen even in the same bunch of frogspawn, some will hatch and the rest will not.

i thought they look the same as frog spawn, but the very inside bit is darker and larger... and they are single.

if its not a newt i dont know what it is.
