Title: Skylarks
Post by: Roy Bham UK on April 14, 2005, 08:44:09
I can't remember the last time I saw one of these, I was fascinated by the way they used to sing high up in the sky then suddenly stop singing, drop out of the sky well away from their nest then fly toward it skimming the meadow so as not to give away their nesting place, smart little birds. 8)

Are they common in your area? (http://img152.echo.cx/img152/2075/skylark3jm.jpg) (http://www.imageshack.us)

I can remember them as a kid they used to hover then drop to what we thought would be there nest, but we never found the nest. I later discovered they would run to there nest after landing. See them very rarely on meadows they have'nt built houses or factory units on [yet]

Until a couple of years ago, the field at the back of our house was left in 'set aside' by the farmer and was always popular with the skylarks. Fantastic to hear them and if you looked carefully you could usually see them hovering against the sky. Now the field has been ploughed and not one lark can be seen. Also the fantastic boundary hedge which supported my blackberry addiction in the autumn has been virtually ripped out.

Yes, we had skylarks flying above the adjacent field every year, but not last year, maybe because the crop was spuds for a change.  I still see them though on the Golf Courses around here and when we go up onto the moors.
I love to hear the twittering of the sky larks!!!

We had a walk along cliff tops this afternoon.  It was quite chilly but bracing weather, but heard and saw a skylark above us, twittering to its heart content.   Its the first time I have heard it this year.
