Has anyone seen a swallow yet?Â
I have been watching for them and wait their arrival. They are one of my favourite birds and look forwarad to their return every year which is usually around the 27th April. No doubt some of you in the South will have seen them already.
They nest under my eaves so hopefully the pair will return this year again. I think they are fantastic birds.

I keep looking but haven't seen any yet in East Anglia. I noticed that there was a sort of Southerly air stream this morning, so shouldn't have to wait much longer.
None in North Belgium either. They're supposed to fly over here on the way to over there so I should see them 20 min's before you lot.....hang-on...what's that out of the window....Nah! It's just a flock of cuckoos.
Nothing in Yorkshire, we always get housemartins a sign that summers not faraway.
No sign in the North East so far. I always look forward to the swallows coming back they are my favourite bird. :D busy_lizzie
:o :o
Don't know if I was seeing things this morning, but am sure, in fact more than sure one flew over about 10 a.m.
One swallow doesnt make a summer, I know......
;D ;D ;D
None yet in the South East Carol. But the 27th April is not far off now !
:D ;)
Non here in North Wales Carol. Cant wait though I love swallows too. They come a lot more since we have built the pond, think they like the little insects that fly over it. Heard an owl last night letting youngest daughter out. Couldn't tell you what kind but it was a really loud twit twoooooo. ;D Lovely. The other thing we get a lot of in the summer late evenings is bats.......swooping over the pond for insects just like the swallows.
If it were a twit terwoo mimi, then you heard two lovely owlies chatting to one another! ;D
No swallows in this part of Essex, but it is a gloriously clear blue skied evening so will go check!

How do you know it was a daughter? I thought young owls all looked alike.

Hello Carol I saw the first swallow of the year today here in North Somerset about three pm. There was only a single bird. About five minutes later I saw my first sparrow hawk. LesH
Hope the pesky sparrowhawk didnt get the Swallow!!!
Ah No...............
:o :o :o
Definately seen my first swallow on the usual telephone wires, only one though, but its a start.
my favourite birdy-i saw my first two this evening on the telephone wire.....what a beautiful evening it was too-you wouldnt think it was the same planet as yesterday-rain and more rain....
kitty ;D
Swallows here this morning, at least four of them, now all we need are the martins to make a real Spring.
The Cuckoo was sat on the roof at 6.30 am and the Greater woodpecker is courting in the Apple tree.
Now all we need is a bit of warmth!
we have lived in a city for the past 5 years and the thing i missed most were swallows-we had plenty of martins...but you cant beat a swallow swooping.... ;D
Still looking for them here in the North East. Surely can't be too far behind everyone else. They are such lovely birds; I keep searching the skies for their lovely circling and swooping. Perhaps when I am out and about this weekend I might spy one. Home garden on Saturday and lottie on Sunday, weather permitting. Happy weekend all you a4ayers. :) busy_lizzie
Still looking out for them in Yorkshire, hopefully over the weekend.......

Swallows, housemartins and swifts all in the same week for me. And a cuckoo yesterday! Spring has sprung. And I'm between Donny and Barnsley....
Just 2 swallows spotted yesterday, in a place where there are normally dozens by this time. :(
This website gives a bit of info on why swallow numbers may be in decline this year. http://www.bto.org/birdtrack/Â

I am a happy bunnie tonight. One swallow has turned up at the nest in the corner of my house. Its gone back and forward to it this evening, twittering away as they do. Great, summer is on its way and the Swallows are back.

Me too Kitty ! ..........well, about 5 miles away. Loved exploring the rock pools, in fact , still do when I'm up there !  ;D I really miss the Northumberland coastline, especially the wild, rugged and unspoilt areas. Wonderful !
lots on the canal at glasson dock.
At last the swallows have come back to Whitley Bay. Saw some circling and swooping yesterday. Lovely to see them , perhaps the weather will change for the better now. busy_lizzie
Swifts and housemartins arrived 2 weeks ago. They are busy feeding and house hunting now.
