Something has happened to my pc - it has gone very slow. About a month back, my son started playing some of the flash games, but on exiting one, I had a blue screen of death with a memory dump. Then, the computer took its time to start up. Then, the computer would restart itself at ever shortening intervals. I had pc-cillin installed- no viruses found! Adaware found some data exploit object things, and deleted them- that solved the problem briefly. On chatting to an IT friend far far away, he said that trend was useless and to go for Norton. Well, I decided to try out kaspersky as I get this free with the open university - it picked up java trojan thingies. The computer hasn't really improved performance, so I contemplated a re-install. Started to look for files to back up from c drive to another drive when I peeked into the windows folder - downloaded programs - housecall (another av from trend) was damaged as was the java runtime environment 1.3.1 (though 1.4.0 was fine (said installed)). I think the best thing is for a clean reinstall on a format c:
I think I will start this tonight - so wish me luck. I might be gone sometime!!!
good luck MV and don't forget Gavin if you get stuck! :D
Fingers crossed for you, Multiveg! Hope it goes well - all best, Gavin
Almost back - grr - had to de-install service pack 2 - the cd wouldn't boot! connected to the net and this was my first port of call - got lots of things to reinstall as this is bare minimum - windows itself (not even upgraded!) and my modem. might finish the rest in the morning (well, later this morning/today!)
Oh poor you Multi! I dread anything going wrong with my computer.......scares the bejeebas outta me!
I used to reinstall quite often with win 98 and ME with ease, but XP is a different kettle of fish - haven't been able to format c: so, have had to reinstall again on the other drive thinking that I could then format c - nope! There was soo much c**p on the c drive which I have been able to delete (xp just writes over the windows folders) - still not happy with that, but at least it is cleaner. Currently doing the various windows update - not installed any programs yet!
Am battling with the updates - neither service pack 1 or 2 will install ???
Fingers crossed, this should be it! well, after office and all that get installed!
What bugs me is you don't even get discs these days. Doing a format without installation discs can be very scary. The format is supposed to go down to a set level and leave factory settings untouched....would you trust that?
Poss answer is something like Ghost but that's too late for me now.
