Sunflower seedling growing away well and now need to be planted out . One or two of them are a little bit leggy , can they be planted deep , like up to the first true leaves like Tomato plants can to encourage roots to grow out from the stem ? Or maybe better not ? 🤔 I need to do this today ! By the way thankyou for my Allotments4All birthday email yesterday ....it made my day ! 🥳
Just planted some out here. They were leggy too. Never grown them before but planted at around a quarter of growth depth. I have no idea if this was right. Good luck with them.
I always plant to above the seed leaves.
I've never tried planting them that deep.....I'll have to give that a try!
It's first year I have bought some seeds and they have got rather leggy so good to know that they can be planted deep.
Saddad :angel11: - O.k. wow ! I can plant them that deep ! 🌻🌻🌻 Thankyou for that . I still have lots of Sunflower seedlings to plant out . Debbie
Hello all, as you can see I'm the newbie, I grow sunflowers every year, some toy shop and the big guys as well, if they are leggy I just hold them up with canes till the stems thicken up.
Always a good idea... welcome to the site.
I have observed that many sunflowers seem to have a smooth section on the lower stem. Higher up the stem shows hairs similar to tomatoes. I've always considered it safe to plant up to that line. I've never risked going deeper.
Leggy sunflowers seem to react to their own straggly growth and after a period outdoors and in breezy conditions get a bit more robust and straighten up to a good degree.
