I inherited my lottie last August (uncultivated for 5 years) and have spent the last 8 months digging, digging, digging. I've never seen dandelion and thistle roots the size of parsnips before!
Anyway, my own pet project is my Asparagus bed, 20ft by 5ft and triple dug to a depth of 3ft and layered with lots of farmyard yuck/muck and raked to a fine tilth to give the little angels a good start in life.
Well today my crowns arrived from Marshalls looking like some kind of multi-legged alien life form. Despite the showers, I got straight out and planted them all (10 Connovers Collosal and 10 Grolim)
I'm Soooo excited and only 24 months to go !!! I must be bonkers !!!! Sorry, but I had to tell someone .......
Rave away dingerbell! Theres only so much your non-gardening other half/kids/friends/colleagues/in-laws can listen to without yawning ;D ;D
I personally think that asparagus is very exciting, you must be so chuffed! :D I am doomed to be a failure in the asparagus department this year, not only were my seeds not germinating, but now the mini greenhouse has blown over and most of the sparagus pots have lost their soil and seeds. :'( Oh well, will have to get crowns next year, and won't be any worse off :D
It's good to hear that someone else is an asparagus nut!!
I've sown an entire packet of asparagus seed outdoors. I soaked them in warm water for 48 hours (as instructed) and then sowed them 2in deep at 6in spacings.
Now I wait and hope. Today winter came back.
You'll be eating your own asparagus at least a year before Moggie and me. Keep posting, and we'll compare notes.
