Title: To prick or not to prick?
Post by: Roy Bham UK on April 06, 2005, 21:19:35
I have Iceberg and cherry tomatoes seeds growing (see below) is it too early to prick them out into say 3inch pots? ??? Only the radish I grew from seed earlier in the year got leggy and carked it. :-[
Any advice gratefully received. ;D

i would say wait a bit. especially with the toms as there isn't enough leaf to get hold of when potting on.

i also think wait a bit

now the tomatoes, i can understand you might be scared becasue they just appeared from nought to 1 inch :)

mine have been growing slowly ever since though - they are just getting their first true leaves and are about 1 1/2 inches tall. i have them on a light not too warm spot and do brush them too.

i would say you would do more damage now to try and prick them out now than if you waited 2 weeks

The Iceberg are twice the size of the Celery that I just p.....d out.

1.  Since they are quite nicely spaced - good sowing!! - I would just thin out the ones where they are grouped - you can afford to lose them. Use tweezers?
Or - if you can't spare them, put them back into the gappy area.

2. Since you have 70 plants there, you could thin them to 2" apart & they would grow on till planting time. 30 lettuce would be enough for this crop??
