Title: Preparing an asparagus bed
Post by: Jesse on April 01, 2005, 22:17:55
Can anyone give me some information about preparing an asparagus bed. I would like to plant some crowns next spring. The patch I have in mind has some couch grass so this year I hope to win the battle of eraticating it. Should I make a raised bed, how deep do the roots grow, how much space should I allow for the bed, anything else I need to know?

Depends on your soil?

On my old plot, no raised bed - just a double-dug bed with lots of compost.  But there the drainage was pretty good.

On my new plot, I'll make a raised bed - I suspect the asparagus roots will rot in the cold, wet claggy clay.

And yes - eradicate perennial weeds as best you can :)

All best - Gavin
