Hello I have had my strawberry bed for three years now and they crop well. I have been informed that I should create a new one as they could become diseased ?? Can anyone please advise and if I do have to do a new bed do I have to buy new plants or just transplant the ones I have ?? Many thanks.
The crop decreases after three years, disease should not be a problem. Ideally you should have taken some runners late summer and made a new bed. If you get plenty of fruit anyway no worries, but take runners next year and plant in a more fertile bed.
Thank you ACE thats brilliant advise - thanks again :-)
I would suggest pegging some runners # next summer into 1 litre pots and feeding well. I picked that up on a thread here and have always been very pleased with the results. Then planted out in late September when some space appears. They fruit well even the first year. I put real compost into the posts. I use my own or recycled. I do not think that potting compost has enough nutrients.
