I had a glut, and there must be 20+ large courgettes unpicked but now pretty inedible. I think they can go mushy pretty quickly so can I leave them where they are to rot down, or will it take too long.

It will not take long for them to rot particularly if you damage them and the frost gets to them. Days rather than weeks. You will be the hero of every vole for miles. Some of the seeds might germinate again next year. We used to have pigs on site and they would love them.
I feel frustrated that I have so few butternut squash but so many oversized courgettes.
Chop them with a spade. Birds will love them, as will the little rodents. They will be gone in a matter of weeks.
