Title: Firdt year on new plot - results so far
Post by: Borderers1951 on July 11, 2017, 11:22:32
My first crops from this, my new plot, are starting to come in.  Results so far:

Peas - Excellent results from an all Kelvedon Wonder planting of 5 x 12ft rows despite mice eating the seeds early on.
Caulis - Despite a good digging-in of well-rotted manure last October/November they show signs of boron deficiency.
Cucs - Good crop both indoors and out
Tomatoes - Fair so far
Other brassicas - Not looking too good except for the red cabbages.  Lots of aphids, just seen a few ladybirds.
Potatoes.  So far so good and no sign of the slug damage I always found on my previous plot.
Carrots - Birds dug over the soil and I lost the lot - will net next year.
Beans (runners and French) - Just starting to come in but lots of flowers.
Onions etc - Badly affected by white rot.
Sweet peppers - Under cloches and looking good so far.
Chilies - Indoors and looking good so far
Gooseberries - A bumper crop from already established bushes.
All other fruits - Newly planted so nothing to come this year.

As I say, my first year on this plot so I am learning it's moods and needs.

White rot is a real pig... try a double depth raised bed.. say 10".. with a membrane at the bottom.. works for some on our site.

Pretty good 1st season! White Rot is a real pain, try treating next years onion patch with garlic powder now, or as soon as it's free of this years crops. It certainly helped me this year, not a total cure, but a significant reduction.
