The old thread hadn't been updated for a while....
Already today some gorgeous sunshine and a little sleety rain. It's a bit breezy and feels brrrr!
What's it like with you?
Only 9C, for the most part sunny with clouds bubbling up but fast disappearing, so still no rain :BangHead: - and a strong, icy north east wind! It's blowing the apple tree blossom down like confetti! Luckily, masses of fruit has set, so fingers crossed for a good harvest after last year's failure.
No appreciable rain in the forecast and only two more nights of seriously low temperatures, so I'm hoping to get some stuff planted out at the weekend - with protection, of course!
Tricia
Same here, sunny with white fluffy bits :sunny: but a bitter cold wind Boo hoo!
Lovely in the greenhouse though, so I've been doing some potting-on :)
I'll be glad when I can stop bringing everything into the warm at night though, tis a real pain in the wotsit!
Changeable. Sunny spells where it's lovely and warm interspersed with clouds and cold wind, and we've had a couple of tiny little sleety showers.
I keep taking my hoody on and off while I'm weeding!
Went out in the orchard for my early morning coffee and sat in the shade. I wondered what all the fuss is about. Then I went out later but had to nip home quick and change from my shorts and T shirt into something a bit warmer.
Went to bed last night garden was covered in a light dusting of snow, and brass monkeys come to mind with the temperature.
This was my Camellia yesterday:

Tulips have stood up to it quite well:

Lovely sunshine here this morning and warm if you can get out of the wind. My no 1 plot was well out of the wind and I was sun bathing. (Woolly hat, two fleeces). Then it started to rain, and finally, snow, sleet and hail. The entire works in about 10 minutes.
We really need some real rain.
Such a shame for your camellia TeeGeE. Is it possible to throw a piece of fleece over the flowers.
Quotesuch a shame for your camellia TeeGee. Is it possible to throw a piece of fleece over the flowers.
Yes it is but if the fleece is touching the flowers as opposed the the foliage the petals still become shriveled, plus it is too much hassle!
To be quite honest I quite like the bi-coloured effect that the frosted blooms give alongside the flowers that were not affected.
Or could it just be that I am getting a bit "idle" in my old age? :coffee2:
here on the sunshine coast no frost last night today saw a high of 14 its a clear sky at the mo so maybe a touch of frost in the morning took a pic of my whites currants in the sunshine
We had a heavy hail shower yesterday evening, still a few little patches laying around this morning.
Light frost overnight and a really beautiful sunny morning :sunny:
Everything seems fine in the greenhouse, tucked up under fleece overnight,
The wind from yesterday has gone leaving a very light breeze, it feels cold this morning but better than yesterday when it was very chilly with the breeze.
TG, sorry about your beautiful Camellia flowers.
Three spuds hit, all the volunteers thriving, all the first earlies thriving 6 salad spuds planted to give them a try out 3 got hit with the cold. I had forgotten I had planted them in a corner. the second earlies and main crop are yet to pop through. Back to springtime again today, no wind, blue skies and sunshine.
Lucky you :happy7:
Grass frost again overnight and gloomy think grey clouds so far today. A lightish breeze and feels on the cold side. A few specks of rain but nothing to get excited about.
light frost this morning and a nagging breeze so done a bit in the pumpkin house
-2.1C last night and at last a tiny shower, but faint drizzle rather than rain and it has all stopped again. Pretty fresh out and sharp breeze too.
London has been cold but no frosts and it is starting to pick up a bit temperature wise. It has been bloody miserable over the last few days though..
It has actually rained! It's not exactly stair rods out there but nice to know the plot has got a bit of a watering prior to what will be a planting out weekend.
Milder today, but it is quite blustery so feels cold in the wind. Cloudy so far and rain forecast for midday onwards. The ground could certainly to with a drop or two!
Raining at last! Proper, heavy stuff filling the water buts and soaking the ground.
Rain ! At last ...after nearly a whole month of no rain..so much for April showers ! I did a little rain dance for joy....and then we noticed that one of the greenhouse windows has slipped ......sigh .... :( Debbie Cornwall
Finally some of the wet stuff :blob7:. Steady for three hours but now the skies are brightening so just have to be thankful that the water butts now have some water in them :icon_cheers: - and the ground will be perfect for some more planting out during the week.
Tricia
Cool and a bit overcast today so watching the Tour de Yorkshire on telly
Turn your telly on and to see my neck of the woods.
Race will be coming through our village (Honley / Holmfirth ) in about an hour
Windy and warm today. Sowed some peas yesterday and the soil was so dry it was blowing up as dust in my face. Nothing into the water butts for nearly two months.
Now just waiting for the rain, due in about an hour.
First proper rain since January bu only a 40 minute downpour. Better than nowt but more please. Want to start planing in the new potager and start on some new ornamental beds.
12:30 rain due in an hour, 13:30 rain due in an hour, 14.30 rain due in an hour.
15:30 no rain due for next two hours. What? Where's my rain?
Nothing not even a drop. :BangHead: :BangHead: :BangHead: :BangHead:
Be patient, I think its coming. See
www.meteo.fr
for current situation, rain right across France, from Marseilles up Wind is south easterly so Ive got my fingers rossed, and the wellies on the mat. Stand pipe on stand -by!
Bright sunny morning, no wind, lovely :sunny:
With all the rain from Sunday and Monday, the water butts are full. Skies are bright and it's quite breezy. Sunshine is forecast for this afternoon so I just might plant out some tomatoes (with protection) :sunny:.
Tricia
somerset. Grey all day, windy cold. We had 10mm of rain in a whole 8 weeks but enough to re-fill the water butts. Now getting drier by the day, it`s the wind
Cloudy with a chilly wind but still no rain and none is forecast its been a very dry spring and with water cut off on the allotment, we have been told that it may be back on this month, and with the greenhouse full waiting to go out it has not been easy
Warm and sunny today, really windy last night and rain looked imminent, but as usually just lately it blew over. Supposed to rain tonight but I'm not counting on it and have watered the newly planted stuff.
here on the sunshine coast windy really really windy and sunny wind is easing slightly now due for a cold night on tuesday/wednesday down to 3 so not planting out until thurs then set fair min night temp 9/10 degrees
Quite relieved that it's cool and less windy today- yesterday was hot and windy, plants really dried out. Still no rain in the forecast, though. :BangHead:
It's turned cold here around Leicester, intermittent drizzle meant I was unable to cut the hedge & mow the lawn today.
I even kept the greenhouse closed up.
It rained all night, first rain for at least 6 weeks, I planted loads yesterday so I'm happy.
Hope some gets up here!
Hi Ya, bit overcast here currently, ground was damp this morning but we have only had a bit of drizzle not even enough to show on the rain gauge or damp the dust fully. More showers forecast but hit and miss so more likely to miss. If it does rain I bet it will be a torrent and run of before it will soak in. Even the farmers round us are wishing for rain its so dry. In fact looking outside the ground is dry already. Still heres hoping as I plants to put out but have been holding off. Fingers croessed and rain dance underway :happy7:
We had some rain overnight :happy7:

We had some rain overnight :happy7:
So did we - so welcome.
Rain all am yesterday. Dull overcast so far today, but now the sun is poking through now and again so hope the skies will clear. My four raised beds are all planted up now - squashes, tomatoes, sweet corn, courgettes and salad stuff. French beans doing well in tubs, as are strawberries.
Tricia
A bit of drizzle thats all this afternoon hardly wet the paving
rain last night the last 4 days 18 degrees day 8to 10 night great for hardening off some of my tomato plants
3 nights rain, but dry days, perfect.
Plants sitting out on the patio, enjoying gentle, warm rain :happy7:
Yes, gentle rain has put paid to continuing the painting of my fences. Shame, as we made a good start yesterday. The next sunny day is forecast for Friday :BangHead:.
Tricia
Same here some gentle rain but managed to work in the greenhouse doing the final potting up of the toms and cucumbers
rain all morning stopped now very humid could do with a storm to clear the air sprayed my tomatoes with bordeux mixture i know its early however better safe than sorry
29.6C now the breeze has dropped. Needless to say our water butts arrived after the rain......... Watering both ornamental and edible treasures with tap water, much to the amazement of our farmer neighbours who don't grow anything you can't eat and think we're mad.
Heavy rain all day today.
Been averaging 10 degrees at night, humid, and two blight warnings in last two days.
Rain nearly all day but we needed it anyway so no complaints
It's been wet wet wet for a few days and you can almost see the grass grow overnight after all the rain.
Today was just lovely, sunny as, though a bit windy at times.
Cloudy with sunny spells this morning after three days of rain so managed to shop and get to the library before light drizzly rain set in about 3pm.
Tricia
Thunderstorm in the night, gave all my new plantings a good soaking. The wheelbarrow a quarter full so it was a good downpour. Another due tonight so watering duties suspended for a while and the near empty waterbut topped up a bit.
Had lots of thunder aound 3 o' clock this afternoon and a shower that barely lasted ten minutes hopeful that we might get some after dark this evening.
Scarcely enough to settle the dust, and now much cooler with strong breeze.
Too far west to get ACE'S thunderstorm, too far east to get the Irish stream, too far south for TeeGee'S. Would like 10mm shower every other day for the next 30 days, and a Sunday "special shower" in line with the doggeral!
QuoteWould like 10mm shower every other day for the next 30 days, and a Sunday "special shower" in line with the doggeral!
Wouldn't it be nice if somehow we could switch the weather on and off like that.
We're away on Anglesey and it rained a lot early morning then again for a few hours this evening. Just hoping we got some of the same at home!
Hot again here today. 22C Humid so feels hotter. Storm on the way. Just hitting the Dorset Coast, due in Salisbury in under an half an hour Due Swindon in 2 hours so might be here in 3.
Hot now at but a bit cooler than yesterday. We had two cracking storms in the night and 8mm of rain. Humidity 74% at 10am with 24C and is now 47% at 32C. Very pleasant with a slight breeze.
Here in East Midlands it's been warm and dry so far, but rain due in a midnight and for most of tomorrow.
Not had any rain in quite a few days there has been showers around but we have missed most of these.
Brown Ants in garden which have been causing some very itchy bites. As were away for a few days i have covered the Ant holes with kettles of hot water and will go out with the Ant powder tomorrow.
All my plants are all well watered and i will give them a second drenching tomorrow and that will have to keep them till wednesday as i have the shades down on the greenhouse it should will the high sun off them i hope :)
We have had a dampening during the night. It is supposed to be raining now for the next few hours, but there is nothing of the sort on the radar. There is another blob over Brittany but it will take at least 4 hours and by then the sun will be up to burn it of, and like yesterdays storms will produce only a few spits and spots.
Looks like it's a non-event here as well. Less than 1mm yesterday, a merely a few drips overnight.
I'd already planned a day in the kitchen making Mango chutney as they're half-price at the moment, so the weeds are safe for another day!
Itis a bank holiday so plenty of rain. :glasses9:
Rain started falling steadily just before 6am and lasted 3 hours, unlike the night before when we had 2 10 minute downpours along with the sound effects. 16mm of rain which is great and it's 20C now so very comfy for sanding some furniture and then oiling planks for some new raised beds.
we have had what i can only describe as a wet mist here in Ely surface is damp and everything else dry will have to get the hose out tomorrow
Windy with driving light rain at the moment, blighty weather!
Proper rain, and forecast for rest of the day and tomorrow as well! :happy7: I've gots loads of hops on standby for mulching on Wednesday!
Rain forecast this afternoon. Cloudy and horribly clamy now. My barrometer knee and elbow both agree that it's damp and going to rain later. ouch.
It is going to hammer down this week as it is the I.W. Pop Festival this week and they are not happy unless they are up to their waist in mud ;). I never went out today as heavy rain was forecast but nothing has happened yet apart from it getting windy. But it was a bit hot over the weekend, I went a bit wobbly with the heat on Saturday, my own fault by going too near that London place, should have stayed with the sea breeze.
the wind has blown the lid off my snail prison and they've all escaped. grrr
Rain, some heavy bursts which are filling the water butts nicely, and very blustery winds.
Tricia
Chucking it down this evening, by the buckets full.
Same as JayB...N Wales is torrential
It's like a return to winter here, driving rain, garden furniture moving on it's own, light and heating on in the house!!
Same here Pescador, lights no - powercut. Heating no, I am resisting, but I'll put my fleece on
Heavy rain on and off all day, and pretty strong winds.
here on the sunshine coast it was like a tropical storm power/telephone lines down monsoon type rain not sure what carnage there will be at the plots tomorrow will just keep everything crossed :sunny: :sunny: :sunny:
Nasty day here in London - sudden vicious guts of wind, horizontal torrential rain, branches and debris all over the place - nice day for a bike ride. Now the sun is out - tempted to go to the plot to access to damage but got some road debris in eye and cant see properly!
N E Hampshire reporting:
Welcome 16.5mm rain. Less welcome gusting westerly winds to 40mph
Damage to coldframe window, blown 6 feet after breaking restraining screw, unbelievable!
French beans stripped of leaves, runners unwrapped from sticks, onions all with 45deg list, random pots and trays strewn across the entire area.If it was easy, anybody could do it.
Another very wet morning, driving rain, grey skies. The wind has dropped, but is still blustery and squally when the heavier rain hits. Garden is littered with leaves and small branches from the last couple of days storms, put the heating on in the house for a little yesterday evening it was so miserable and cold!
A bit of everything here- heavy rain, wind, sun, humid, rainbow...
Cloudy with just a light shower at lunch time and the sun is now shining
Sun is shining, sky is blue with no clouds at the moment. There's a light breeze, :icon_cheers: lovely :coffee2:
Rather warm yesterday, and still 26C at 7 p.m. Yesterdays official maximum in east midlands was 27.2.
Due to be hotter today, and I'm doing a Pop-Up stall from 12 to 3 !!!
Scorchio! Still a bit of breeze thank goodness! Thought I heard a bit of rain in the early hours but I may have been dreaming!
32 on field edge 3m up and maintaining 22 downstairs in the house. Solar shading, eco house. All s facing windows upstairs have insulating curtains tightly closed. I want to pick blackcurrants but may well wait until early morning, I am not good in the heat
47 degrees C in the shade today. Not much growing- looking forward to going to the UK at the weekend :-)
That's warm dr. John!
Still hot. About 30. Brize Norton 28 normally cooler up there. Cloud beginning to bubble up. Maybe we will get a thunderstorm.
Very hot today same as yesterday its been forecast for at least 2 more days then to get a bit cooler
Very very hot, went down to the shore to get a sea breeze, didn't work, now l am feeling a bit groggy with the heat.
Too hot here in Enfield, north London, thought the Isle of Wight would be cooler. Going to be even hotter tomorrow.
I know my limits, being of the older generation, so I am staying in today, again. Slept well, thanks to a good fan working on a timer until 3.30. Opened all the house windows as it is 22 in the house and 14 outside. Going out to water my pots and tomatoes in a mo. I have moved some flowers into shade. Later will draw all the s window curtains upstairs. I have solar shading overhangs, so am not getting direct sun in the house. I have housework to do, will set to shortly, get it done in the coolest part of the day
33C forecast. 38C so far today and set to get hotter in the next couple of days. Too hot to garden other than watering treasures in pots which include toms and squashes and chilies and cucs which are producing fruit so coping OK so far. Thick walls and tiled floors so the house is much cooler and we've had a very busy few days playing out with some friends who came to stay so a rest and a flop will do us good.
All blinds closed and I'm staying as still as possible. It's burning hot out there :sunny:. Watered all pots early but they'll need more water this evening - as will the greenhouse. With no rain forecast through to the end of next week my water butts, all six of them, will soon be empty :BangHead:.
Will spend the afternoon watching Queens from my recliner :happy7:. (Or maybe reading my latest Jack Reacher!)
Tricia
roasting here 36 in house 39 outside sitting with fan on
29.2 official Met Office temp here in East Midlands. Should be cooler tomorrow.
Very hot here again today too hot on the allotment makes you feel like doing nothing which does not go down well as I like to keep myself busy
A rather pleasant 17C this morning, overcast with a bit of a breeze. Only forecast to get to 24 today Brrrrr!!
So hot, 4th shirt today all wet through. Doing the plants a world of good, can't say much for myself though.
its too hot to do much
28 degrees at the moment.
But a light breeze has started up this afternoon :icon_cheers:
Currently 24C overcast and very humid. Expecting thunder storms soon.
My weather station recorded today's maximum at about 3pm, when it hit 33.3 C in the shade.
Very hot I am thinking that a thunder storm might clear the air, not sure if we will get one here though
What a change in a few hours, yesterday evening it turned cloudy with a mist and the temperature dropped to around 17C. This morning again mist blowing through the garden and around 16 C. This is much more typical of summer weather!
Mist here too at 5:30 and now a thin veil of cloud so a mere 34C. Cool enough to work in tho so OH has rotavated the first two beds in the potager and spread bags of multi-purpose compost I'll be out there planting later this pm. Our own compost bins are too new but should be cooking nicely in this heat.
Much cooler today, although we've had no rain at all. Temp is down to 17C this pm with a wind of 24km/h, which will still be drying things out!
Where's the rain gone?
Still no real rain apart froma light shower last night, and none forecast for next few days. Much cooler, though.
Normal service has resumed. Comfortable night, 21C at 11am and 28C at 3 pm. Just need some rain now. They're promising some for next Wednesday........................
Dry and breezy which has given a little light relief from the heat
QuoteNormal service has resumed.
Strange you should mention this as I have been thinking lately of how abnormal the weather this has been over the last few years.
My question:
is what we have had over the last couple of years " the norm"? I hope not because if it is I think I will have to go back to the drawing board in terms of adjusting my methods and varieties.
This year has been a bit of a nightmare for me.
For example: winters have been relatively warm so the temptation is to start earlier which I did this year meaning my plants went out just as the drier weather set in!
This meant my young plants lacked the moisture they required at this stage, (my garden and allotments are a dust bowl at the moment) and as result many of them are in advance of normal whereas others are quite poorly and I have lost more young plants than normal.
As many of you know I have been keeping a diary since 1986 and I have been comparing the old entries and the most recent plus the averages as in my website and this year I would say things are around three weeks in advance of what I would expect for the time of year here in my neck of the woods.
So if as you say this is normal then you can keep it, I am too long in the tooth now to start learning how to garden again to fit in with the weather patterns of today.
So for once Obelixx I have to disagree with you and that it is
I hope that the recent weather will not be the norm!
After the heat things are now rather cooler. The courgettes and squashes were enjoying the heat. May was brilliant: a great mix of sunshine and showers everything has got off to a great start here. I am up to four courgettes a day.
Hopefully with a bit of cooler weather the runner beans will set, in the heat most of the flowers were falling off.
Could do with some rain. The raspberries are not as juicy as they were a few days ago.
Tee Gee - I completely understand your questioning how to proceed in future. I think we just have to wait and see and spread sowings and plantings over a few weeks to cover all possibilities for early starts and late frosts.
The supposed average for June here is 20C but the last few days have been well into the high 30s and worse. It's also been a very dry winter and spring - again, not normal. The meteo sites reckon we may get some rain late Tuesday into Wednesday. We have 3 water butts holding 350litres each but it's nowhere near enough, especially when we get the potager going. We're thinking of buying a couple of 1000l tanks now.
Too soon to tell if this year is a blip or part of a developing pattern but we're keeping records of temps and rainfall to help.
Just 2mm of rain yesterday, useless amount for watering the plants but perfectly adequate for spoiling the family reunion BBQ!!
Hissing down, but I got a few odds and sods planted before it started. Those sort of plants that you had over from the main planting but could not bring yourself to throw away. Now I have dug up a few potatoes there is a bit of room spare so might as well use it.
Snap Ace!
My water barrel is over flowing, my plants look perky now that they have had a god soaking, so all I I want now is some more of last weeks weather to return!
Not much to ask is it? :sunny:
Can you hang on just a few days Tee Gee, need more rain here, but sun on Sunday would be good!
Dry a.m., but light rain since about 2:30 p.m. I don't think it's enough to replenish my water butts by very much though - unless the rain continues through until tomorrow!
Tricia
I was supposed to deluge during the afternoon and night but it did not happen, by 10pm we had only had one drizzly shower and the road was dry. A bit of rain in the night but road was dry by 6 am and the surface of allotment was wet and a few puddles around, but four inches down things are as dry as a bone. Will be ok for things I have been watering, but the potatoes and carrots need a good dose of rain. But enough to get the weeds excited. Hopefully the beans will set, lots of bees this morning.
Today was supposed to be solid rain but only a few spits and spots. the blobs on the radar seem to be doing a little dance round us.
well wimborne has seen steady drizzle all day since I got up and just checking now with my latest weather vane......yes he just ruffled some rain drops off his feathers...........and made a B line for some Rhodes for cover.....seems like its in for the evening here too..........our small growing area was desperate for it though the tatters and bean rack will appreciate the stream of Gods Gallons............... :icon_cheers:
I know we needed it but its been pouring with rain all day so did not even get to the allotment but tomorrow is supposed to be drier, lets hope so
Rain all night Tuesday and all day yesterday. That's enough now, thanks!
A few spits and spots today, we still need rain.
Gone cold here too.
