Post by: Nobbyman on March 27, 2005, 20:41:13
Hi all!!

I have been told that these are good for a pond and clean the water by eating debris etc!!

I am interested in getting some!!

Does anyone know the best place to purchase/cost/anything else I should know about water snails!!

Nobbs, if you look at the thread, help with plants, Jesseve has posted a link to an aquatic place, I see they sell snails! DP

Mine just seemed to appear. I think maybe their eggs came in on plants?

A word of warning about snails...

A friend gave me spare weed to help keep my pond water healthy.  The generous soul also included some pointy-shelled snails, which ate debris and growing plants alike! :'(

It took me a while to remove them all, leaving the dark, disc-shaped snails that don't appear to do any harm at all to genuinely healthy growth.  The pond plants recovered eventually.  Sorry I can't give you the biological names of the offending snails - just be careful! :)

Hi Sedum!

Thanx for the advice -I've done some reading - apparently ramshorn snails only eat dead matter the great pond snail eats live plants - i think thats right!

Can anyone confirm this?

Yep - ram's horn ones are the disc-shelled ones I described, they look just like curly horns now I come to think of it!
