Title: a question of sex
Post by: nitiram on March 27, 2005, 19:24:26
My daughter tells me that only male urine can be used on the compost heap because of the hormones in female urine. As urine is supposed to be a good compost accelerant (Bob Flowerdew swears by his 'recycled cider') does anyone know if this is true? If it is I will have to try and persuade my husband to water the compost instead..

On another topic, there is this wonderful website about  garden sheds ...www.readerssheds.co.uk

i think both work well, however, to deter foxes from visiting your plot, the male urine works better because of the male pheromones.

more information than you wanted, eh? ;)

and welcome

Thanks for the information. I don't mind foxes, we see them walking up the middle of the road by moonlight, quite a sight. Does female urine actively attract foxes?

i think the human scent puts them off, apart from the pheromones which to a fox mean 'this territory is taken. sorry dude, move along'
female urine will not attract the male foxes - they will not like the human smell. but like i said, the male urine is more powerful in that department

Isn't it just...a slow saunter to the compost bin, recycle the cider and away..can't see me doing that so easily and to collect said liquid in a jug seems rather medical to me..

It seems that some ladies' wee contains unchanged hormones from contraceptive pills.

This won't make any difference to the compost heap:  it's the nitrogen in the urea that helps composting.   Nor will the hormones get into the veggies.

But in the water systems the hormones get right through water purification and back into the mains water.   Half of this is drunk by men.

Over the last 20 years there has been a significant increase in gynaecomastia among men.

So ladies,  PLEASE put it on the compost heap.
