Title: Freezer for Garage
Post by: cambourne7 on March 01, 2016, 18:23:42
Hi All,

Now i have power in the garage and have the potential for actually growing things this year - YIPPIE   :blob7:

I need to find a freezer that i can put into the garage to store produce as well as things like bread and meat so i can stock up on things :)

Any advice?

We recently bought a Russell Hobbs chest freezer, I think 142 litre size in black, which we found at a good price.  It also comes in white, and in 100 litre and 200 litre sizes.  I would have bought the 200 litre, but space dictated the mid-sized one.

There are obviously pros and cons to chest freezers and upright freezers.  We have both.  The uprights are good if you store plastic boxes of stewed fruit (which we do a lot), because you can fill the drawers efficiently.  The chest freezers are good for Ziplock bags full of veg which can be put into carrier bags side by side.

We also have a Miele upright freezer, which is fabulous, but it was very expensive.  The Russell Hobbs is far better value for money!

Make sure that the intended appliance is suitable for use in a room that can itself get cold. Many are designed for use at "ROOM TEMPERATURE",and if the temperature can fall (due to no heating) , they cut out and do not come on again! This allows the contents to thaw, with consequential loss.

Was going to say similar to Ancellsfarmer, that many are not suitable for use outside, saying that we have had a fridge freezer in the shed before now as we wern't aware and no problems. ( Including bad winters but it is worth knowing about) Glad that it is all coming together for you

Our garage is part of the house and is connnected by a walk through pantry/scullery so it's convenient to have extra freezer and fridge capacity in there.   We currently have two upright freezers in the garage and have had at least one in there for 20 years with no trouble.  We like the uprights as the drawers are a very efficient way of storing food with easy organisation and easy to find.    I use mine for meat, poultry and fish bargains as well as fruit and veg and, of course ice cream.

The two current freezers are Bosch and Siemens and are between 6 and 10 years old.  We also have a fridge for storing beers and wine and cordials and that works with no bother.    It was bought in 1977 as a kitchen fridge and is still going strong - she said, touching wood.

We have a tall upright freezer in our utility room.  We also have a similar one outside in our shed and next to it we have a small chest one.

Try to get one with an A or A+ rating then it won't cost much to run.

My post was from personal experience, together with sometime employment in appliance retailing. This appeared in The Daily Telegraph, 15 January:

Get your potential supplier to assure you as to the type. Those who are "Euronics Centre" members are equipped to give fair, honest ,independent(from manufacturers) advice.

Hi,I have two an upright which is used for baked stuff, pies et  and icecream, then I jave a massive chest one..20 odd cubic feet which has dividers in.I find them very useful as I can separate different meats and veggies ect without having to go fishing.MINE are outside but under cover from the big deck above so it is quite mild down there.THE only problem I have had was from my garden rat...he managed to crawl through the small hole where the cord comes out on the chest one.He then built a comfy nest in the warm area.He also chewed  through the wiring so it turned off, fortunately I noticed quickly and we had someone come and repair straight away.So if anything can get near it stuff that hole with wire wool. The nest was amazing,he even managed to pull a corn cob in there with him.He has caused me a lot of trouble..he ate all my beets and even managed to get in thr greenhouse and eat the tomatoes right off the vine
lHe has good taste though,he only ate the best ones   Xx jeannine

Found a freezer and will be getting it in September which will give me time to get the greenhouse inner walls lined which will help with the cold. Have someone coming to quote for it on friday - could do it myself but might be easier to get a professional in. The roof for example is just tile and a liner so am going to get some thin insulation put up there as well :)
