Title: Steptoe & Son here
Post by: Roy Bham UK on March 24, 2005, 21:14:16
Look what I found being dumped in the street! ::) (click thumbnail) I didn’t see a rusty old tin box but a “Spade and Fork Party” barbecue style having never owned one couldn’t resist the temptation, wadda ya think? ???... no don’t tell me ;D…tell me later. ;D

I’m planning on having a barbecue over the weekend up the lottie as a bit of fun and fuel for the helpers, anyone have any tips for flavoring burgers sausages and chicken or have I missed any other meaty treats? 8)

WOW!  What a find!
;D  I have endless recipes for barbequeing, being that I have an OH that loves to barbie all year round! (Was once seen in the snow, on New Years Eve, in his tuxedo barbequeing ostrich! OK so we are weird ;D )
Depends on what kinda chook, or should I say, what part of the chook you wanna cook? Hey a poet! ;D We find the best way to do sausages, and burgers too (especially homemade ones) for that matter are cook em first, that way when you toss them onto the flames, and the fat in them ignites, (yay, fire!) they are already cooked through, and you don't end up with raw insides and yucky tasting burnt outsides as so often happens over here! YEACH! But do make sure they are reheated thoroughly so as not to poison anyone! :o
At home we take them straight from the oven to the grill.
Usually use local flavoured sausages ie: Pork n apple or hops.
All meats are great to barbie, and don't forget kebabs, we love lamb ones, oh and chicken n bananas wrapped in bacon.
Oh and pork fillet marinaded chinese style is good.........OK I shall stop now! ;D  DP

Brilliant find Roy! Are some people either too rich or too dim to realise what they're giving up?

You've got loads of ideas here  but if you want any more contact....

Cotswold Lass (AKA Mrs 2 patios, BBQs-R-US) !!  ;D

By the way, you can great marinades in most good stores - Tuna in Lime and Coriander is SCRUMMY, there are devellish sauces for meats, all else you need is a few big salad bowls, spuds and some drinkie poos

Nice one, Roy 8) and hope you have a great barbie. I live in S. Birmingham - wind in the right direction might get a whiff of the goodies being grilled...aksherly, how's your overarm bowling? You could try lobbing me over a baked potato or something ???

Anyway, barbies..may I put in a plea for if you're cooking chicken?  Please can you perhaps poach it first (possibly in milk) at home before taking it to the lottie. I once, stupidly, continued eating a BBQ'd chicken leg I could see wasn't cooked enough, just to be polite, like...the resulting salmonella poisoning I came down with was something I'd never ever like to experience again. :'(

Apart from marinading the meat, etc., you got a rosemary bush on your lottie? Throw some on the grill or over the meats....

Have a great time.

Thank you all for the tips on food and health, :o  can’t wait to try it out now,  8)maybe tomorrow weather permitting, I think I will use the small one up the lottie (spoiled for choice :P) and the big one at home, can’t believe how easily they cleaned up, 8) I suppose being enamel they were quite robust. ;D

Alishka, welcome back, ;) are you a Brummie? I am and live near the Frankley Services M5 where about are you? ??? Roughly? ??? ;D

Thanks for the welcome Roy :-*. Nothing 'rough' about where I live, tho. V. genteeeeeel it is ::) - The Home of the Flake, like..no pubs (tho the Country Girl, aka Mecca, is round a couple of corners), no chippies, but good old George Cadbury gave us gardens big enough to grow our own veggies and I've still one of the original apple trees that was planted when the estate was built. So it's almost as old as me, then :P Praps I'll bump into you in Wilko's, Northfield, one of these days? I'll be the one blocking the doorways with trolleyloads of goodies ;D Intend to hit it Big Time over this holiday. Cheers Ower Kid, Lish

Alishka your right, nice place Quackerland (alcohol-free-zone) :o my uncle lived and worked there there for too many years to remember and died one month short of his 100th birthday :(, he used to bring us lots of choccies when we were kids, yummy! ;D ;D

Roy that is a fantastic find. It is amazing what is out there if you look.  Some people are so wasteful, but lucky you for finding it. I have got a nice marinade for sausages, I will look it out.

Lovely to see Alishka back again.  Hope you are hale and hearty Alishka.  Welcome back!

"Quackerland" -  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

It's extraordinary how long the 'old' ex-Cadbury worker peeps here live ~ most of my gardening friends are well into their 80s and 90s, and I'm not talking pottering around gardening, here ~ these lot dig up old established trees, roots and all, in a flash, before breakfast :o

Anyhow, back to your lottie barbie. Are you going to plant a barbie-herb section - mints, sages & rosemary, f'rinstance? And just think - you're going to be able to cook stuff straight from the plot, later in the year. How cool is that?

Is that really the same barby? Amazing. You must have spent a lot of time fixing it up like that. You must be so handy and full of energy, fantastic. Hat off to you Roy.

Rose.mary did you not click the thumbnail ??? The reason I was attracted was some builders were throwing old timber out for collection, I asked if I could help myself they said take what you want and under it was two BB Q's looking very sad, I lost interest in the timber. ;D

Needles to say the small black BBQ performed very well today up the lottie and served up 8 Beef Burgers, 8 Hotdogs and 8 small Chicken Wings, not bad for a first attempt, 8) there wasn't much work done but a great family day out and the weather was sunny & beautiful even though they forecast rain in the afternoon 8)

Well yes as someone bought me a multi pack of 10 different varieties of herbs but no rush for sowing as yet cuz I haven't got my spuds in yet :o
