I've grown runner beans and broad beans before and have not had to protect either of them from birds.

Peas do need protection from pigeons. I don't know about french beans...

Birds won't normally fly or land or walk between rows so if you put a row of pea sticks either side of your peas you stand a good chance of being pigeon free. Your sticks are to hand too.

The birds eat my runners at home -but not at the allotment, and leave the borlotti beans (which look a lot like runners) alone every where?

If you use netting be careful to make sure it's stretched quite tightly.  If it's saggy it can trap the birds and kill them  :)
