Title: square foot gardening
Post by: aquilegia on March 24, 2005, 10:08:23
Any hints, tips, experiences, etc?

I was reading about it in my bible (ie - HDRA's organic gardening book) yesterday and am tempted to try. My new raised beds just happen to be exactly 4ft x 4ft, so it's like it was meant to be.

No experience - there's lots about it on the net.

I discovered it about 14 years ago, and have Mel Bartholomew's book, which funnily enough is called square foot gardening! ;D (see it has been updated and re-named now!) One of my most used books I have to say, especially useful for those of us short on space!  Bits of it work for me Aqui, especially the single sow thing, why sow masses of seeds only to thin then out, when you can place one seed exactly where it is going to grow! More time consuming in the beginning, but not bad if you are growing in blocks, and no thinning out ;D

Of a theme ..... but we only plant half rows of stuff (even though we may plant several half rows).  It sounds daft but the way I see it is that you are more inclined to weed a half row than a full row.  It gives you more of a sense of achievement if you get my drift.  You can complete a whole half row if you're pushed for time.  That and the sprogs are easily conned to weed a row if it's not huge.  It works for me.

I've converted my Herb Garden into a Square Foot Garden.  It is a 6'X6' raised bed.

It is real;ly fantastic because everything has it's place.  Better than that it looks to organised with all the labels.

Makes it super easy for me to tell my partner to go pick some tarragon & garlic chives. He know's exactly what to get.
