Title: Raspberry recommendations....
Post by: Deb P on July 19, 2015, 11:18:12
My autumn fruiting raspberry plants gave up the ghost this year so I'd like to replace them. They were autumn bliss, but there are loads of newer varieties now. I've been looking at Ruby Beauty, but can't find any info or reviews about the taste / yields ; perhaps they are so new no one knows yet? I would prefer a variety that doesn't need a huge permanent support as I want to put them in a raised bed, but a big one 6ft x 6 ft. Anyone got any favourites that will fit the bill?  :sunny:

I've had Autumn Bliss too which have been brilliant but are also giving up the ghost now. Got some Joan J on recommendation from someone here and they seem to be doing well , fingers crossed.

I second Joan J. They were planted last year, replacing Autumn Bliss - and produced a reasonable crop. This year the 10 plants look fantastic and are loaded with flowers and fruit. I've already been picking a handful most days - huge juicy berries  :sunny:.

I've got Joan J and Polka - both really good. Polka's been cropping for a couple of weeks on the old canes and there are loads more to come on the fresh canes, going by the flowers that are appearing.

I grow Joan J and Autumn Bliss.  Although Joan J are bigger and they are a nice raspberry, I still prefer Autumn Bliss.

So get more AB is my advice.

Thanks for your recommendations, looks like Joan J is a winner! I think I'll get some if those and some more Autumn Bliss as well!

Another vote for Joan J.  And also Polka.  Prefer the flavour of Polka but more fruit on the Joan.  For me both trump autumn bliss in every way.

I've only grown Autumn Bliss so can't help with a different recommendation. I must admit I took them out in the end as they were just such aggressive growers in the spot I'd planted them in. I'm hoping to put a new bed next year, good to read the reviews  :happy7:

Perhaps a mixed bed of Polka, Joan J and Autumn Bliss?! I think I will dedicate one of the larger beds at this rate!  :sunny:

Different ground, yes. I'm making a purpose built bed for them, the old raspberry bed has been there for at least 10 plus years and just dwindled away, so I'm completely renovating that bit.
