Title: Crown prince
Post by: ber77tie on June 11, 2015, 21:51:06
Last year I grew some spaghetti squash on trellis. I wonder has anybody grown squash crown prince on a trellis or does it need to trail on the ground?

I grew Crown Prince on obelisks last year. As the squash started to grow I netted them in nets saved from buying oranges at Lidl which were then tied to the horizontal metal rings of the obelisks. It worked well - the heaviest weighed over 4 kg. I am using the same obelisks this year for Autumn Crown, Waltham and Winter Butternuts and letting another Autumn Crown run loose on the ground between them.

yes  these are big babies.  3 or 4 years ago I grew one up a wigwam / scaffolding I made up from canes and off cut stakes. I didn't realise how enormous it would get. Think I had 3 or 4 squash  in the end and it was pretty Heath Robinson but did the job. The squash kept well as cured them well and stored them on the conservatory windowcills. Metal scaffolding or similar might have been a better plan.. :drunken_smilie:
