Title: dates
Post by: ACE on May 17, 2015, 14:05:12
20 years after I planted it and I suppose it was 5 years old at the time. I have flowers on the date palm. Has anybody in GB ever had the same and did you get fruit from it? I used to tie all the leaves together when it was young to protect it but I have just let it do it's own thing since it got too high. If the cold gets it usually it just looses those few fronds then starts another batch in the spring.

That gives me hope for mine ACE. I planted 14 Medjool date seedlings about 5 years ago but only 4 survived that winter. They should be at least 2 metres high now but are only half a metre high. I am hoping I have at least one male in the 4 and that the rest are females.
If you have one flowering, I hope it is a female and that there is a male not too far away.  I have been told that once mature, say 15 years, then one can expect up to 100 Kgs of fruit in the years they produce.
All the best with your tree ACE.
