Title: Christmas Cactus
Post by: aquilegia on March 22, 2005, 13:25:04
I have a small cutting of a Christmas Cactus that's rooted.

I've never grown them before - how often should I water it? Does it like sun or shade? How long do you think before it flowers?

I have several now and they live in mt conservatory where they are baked all summer long!  I only water when the compost is dry, or they look a little limp (not ideal!) and feed when I feed the others.  They are potted in free draining gritty compost.  They flower as the days shorten in winter, thus Christmas Cactus.  Be warned, once the flower buds are showing, try not to turn the plant or move it's location as the buds turn to follow the sun and can twist clean off the plant!  I reakon yours will flower this winter.

Love the colour Marianne.  :D  Aqui, I tend to leave mine out in the summer hidden under something leafy.  Just have to make sure that the evil slugs done find it though or you will have net curtain christmas cactus.

Thank you Mimi !!  We have several plants of different colours and they are beautiful !

Of course, in summer they are allowed out onto the patio but it is too cold for the moment ..
